It's worth pointing out that if Paul Wotton plays a part in the two Easter games against Bury and Wimbledon he will equal Sammy Black's record of 491 appearances for PAFC.

With four games to go in the regular season and with Wotton out of contract this summer let's hope we witness history in the making and Wottsie plays in at least three of those games to become Argyle's second all-time appearance holder behind Kevin Hodges.

Sammy Black's record has stood for 76 years.

1: Kevin Hodges - starts 586, sub 34, total 620.
2: Sammy Black - starts 491, sub 0, total 491.
3: Paul Wotton - starts 448, sub 41, total 489.

Thanks to GOS.

I think he'll extend for another year as a back up at CB & CM, as well as doing some coaching which he's apparently already started.

He'll manage oneday.

Fantastic effort from Mr Argyle, Paul Wotton.

Of course, Sammy Black's appearances were all starts, whereas Paul's include 41 sub appearances.

How can Sammy Black's record have stood for 76 years if it was beaten by Kevin Hodges?

It's the record for being in second place of course!

One thing to bear in mind: Sammy's 491 appearances were all in the starting line-up (naturally in those days). Wottsy's total includes 41 substitute appearances.

Pedantic but a fair point.

Wotton has been a great servant and I think he can do one more year.

I'm not sure we should be pushing him into management though. What evidence do we have that he'd be any good?

He's an Argyle legend. I hope he can reach 492! I'm not sure I'd offer him a contract exetension, though. He's already involved in coaching the youth teams, so he can keep that job.

Kevin Hodges was later so Sammy's record couldn't have been for second place. As for appearances, Sammy's (for obvious reasons) cannot be added to whereas Wotton's can extend therefor bringing the gap between 1st and 2nd closer.

An appearance is an appearance, whether from the start or as a sub. Back in pre-substitute days if a player got so injured that he couldn't continue he would simply go off and the team would go down to ten men. You will struggle to find records of when this might have happened though. There is no guarantee that Sammy Black finished every one of his 491 starts.

You will struggle to find records of when this might have happened though. There is no guarantee that Sammy Black finished every one of his 491 starts.
In pre-substitute days, if a player got injured, he would do his very best to stay on the pitch, even if it meant limping on the wing, to avoid going down to 10 men. If he did go off, it wasn't unusual for him to reappear after dressing room treatment. So I reckon the proportion of games that a player did not complete was actually quite small.

Now we have substitutes, which means that an oncoming player usually makes a relatively short appearance, typically in the latter stages of a game, and even for just a couple of minutes. What's more, a starter is less likely to end a game, not just because of injury (where there is now no reason to make up the numbers), but also for tactical reasons.

You are right of course, there are no stats to back up the effects of injuries in the old days and substitutions in the more modern game, so it's impossible to make objective judgements - hence you have to say that an appearances is an appearance, no matter what the form.
