1) With Bobby Reid gone it was Blizzard who filled the link role. Mellor recovered enough to make the starting 11 and O'Connor moved inside to partner Cox. Despite (or maybe because of) Coventry, Alessandra came back in for Smalley.

2) Good job he did as it was he who was brought down for a soft but genuine penalty. Reid finished it well. Then it was Alessandra the scorer. Reid completed the first-half scoring and deserved his goals for his strength and persistence with creating chances.

3) Everyone had a good first 45 but the 2 wing-backs and the 3 central midfielders were excellent. It wasn't all one way with McCormick forced into saving with his legs at one point. The goals were all well taken and the score could have been anything from 5 or 6 to 0 or 2 at half-time.

4) Portsmouth started the second on top but Argyle had a better penalty shout turned down when Alessandra was tripped off the ball. Argyle defence held firm though.

5) Having given nothing much apart from the pen in the first 45 the ref started blowing for everything in the second. Caught off-side a lot throughout the game Alessandra and Reid seemed to need the ball quicker from midfield.

6) Second 45 Portsmouth pressed the midfield more and Argyle were unable to control the game as they had in the first. As the half pressed on Argyle dropped too deep. Sheridan brought on Smalley for Reid. Bit surprising with Reuben on a hat-trick. Later on Harvey and Morgan replaced Cox and Alessandra.

7) During a moment of relief from defending Cox hit the bar with a deflected drive. A few moments later Smalley went one on one with the 'keeper but the angle was too narrow. Into the last 10 and as Portsmouth pushed forward gaps began to appear. Desperate blocks by 'keeper and defenders kept out the 4th.

8 ) A good team performance all round but O'Connor, Nelson and Reid stood out for me. Thoroughly deserved result built mainly on a first half performance that was so good that there aren't many teams in this division that could have stood up to us, and a solid and resilient defensive second 45.

9) Good to see the away end full and Argyle fans at full cry for long periods of the game.

Sensational first half. Huge credit to Sheridan, coaching team and players. So many candidates for MOTM but for me O'Connor was outstanding.

Really put our marker down today. The rest of the league will see us as a major threat I am sure. We looked so strong at the back and won with something to spare. A good advert for basement league football.

Very generous. I'd say they are fair for half time marks. In the second half they did what they needed to and what was needed was not 8 & 9 performances. If you take 1 off of everyone I'd say that was more realistic.

So you think the likes of O'Connor, Hartley, Nelson, Cox and Mellor only put in 6 or 7 performances in the second half. Give it a rest.

Outstanding performances all over the pitch. 3 goals clean sheet and cant pick out an average performance there today. Team MOTM.

Just perfect, the best team performance for a long time.

A good day for Plymouth on the national stage; a fantastic pre-match tribute to those lost in the wars followed by a fantastic display on the pitch by the players.

We were simply just too good for Portsmouth and could have scored six or seven goals.

Pompey started the stronger of the two teams but once Alessandra won the penalty there was only one team in it.
The ref took an age to decide if Alessandra was tripped or not and finally blew his whistle. Up stepped Reid to send the keeper the wrong way and 1-0.

Argyle were dominant with both wing-backs, Kellett and Mellor, causing all sorts of problems. The Pompey defence couldn't contain Reid who held up the ball well before turning and running at the retreating defenders.

The second goal came courtesy of a great run from Mellor who set up Alessandra, it looked like he mis-hit his shot but it still found the net, if he had thumped the ball his shot may have been saved. Either way it was 2-0 to the Greens.

With McCormick a spectator at the other end, apart from one save with his feet, chances followed for Argyle but couldn't be converted.

The third and decisive goal was a pure team effort as the ball was passed across the pitch from left to right before finding Mellor who pulled the ball back to Reid and he fired in from 20 yards to make it 3-0.

By now Argyle looked confident and had a look of assurance.

We sat back for the start of the second half because, as expected, Pompey came at us, however there was always an Argyle player covering, either closing down, tackling or blocking a shot.

Despite pressure from Pompey it was still us who looked the more dangerous, especially on the counterattack.

You know when things are going well when we can take off our top striker and one of top scorers in League Two. Smalley was Reid's replacement and he could have had two goals himself - one shot was well saved and another shot hit the crossbar.
Reid did receive some treatment from the physio when he sat in the dugout.

Even Cox joined in the fun when he advanced forward and let fly from 25 yards out but his shot thundered off the crossbar.

This performance will send a message out to the rest of League Two, we look a complete team, there was no weak link today.

I like the way the two wing-backs can attack or sit back and defend, to make a defensive back five, depending on the situation of the game.

Kellett and Mellor were just superb on the wings and in defence. Blizzard got forward and filled the void left by Bobby Reid, he doesn't have the same running skills but he did a good job for the team.
O'Connor was everywhere - "thou shalt not pass" and is close to being my Man of the Match.

Cox was not far behind O'Connor in work rate, both totally dominated a poor Portsmouth midfield. Whereas we closed down and harassed the Pompey players, they gave us the time and space to launch attack after attack.

All the talk has been about the loss of Bobby Reid but the better of the two Reid's showed why he is a top striker, two goals plus he bullied the Pompey defenders. Other clubs will know about how good Reid is, however that performance on national TV will rubberstamp the reports from the scouts and agents. Fingers crossed during the January transfer window!

At the back Nelson, Hartley and McHugh all have good games, again. Another clean sheet chalked up.

I was surprised how poor Pompey were or was it we were so good we made them look poor?

This is our best team since the Championship days.

McCormick 7, Nelson 7, McHugh 7, Hartley 7, Mellor 8, Kellett 8, Cox 7, O'Connor 8, Blizzard 7, Alessandra 7, Reid 8, Smalley 7, Harvey 6, Morgan 6.

Sheridan 8.

Entertainment 8.

Thoroughly pleasing. Some of the football in that first half was absolutely exceptional, the third goal in particular. We looked really energetic and dominated. The two full backs were our key players today, both got up and down brilliantly. Mellor is so confident going forward, he gives us a genuine wide threat and Kellett was first to absolutely everything.

More of that please lads!

A great team performance with attacking menace in the first-half and defensive strength in the second. No point in repeating what has been said but three players particularly worthy of mention:

Kellett - is like a little dynamo and has big future in prospect;
Mellor - from someone who couldn't pass in his first game through nerves to a genuine all-round attacking full-back (excellent today).

And O'Connor. His type is so often the unsung hero so I'm pleased to see the recognition on this thread. He was simply brilliant today. Top player who I so wish was ours for keeps.
