I agree with all that, but...
We should not ignore the fact that the discontented do exist, and linking to my earlier point, that they will inevitably grow as the upward progress gets harder.
Out of sight on other sites yes, thankfully. But we put them completely out of mind at our peril. I check in now and again, not because I agree with or am in any way open to the nonesense that goes on there, but to ensure I am not burying my head to the WHOLE Argyle picture - warts 'n' all. The hardcore discontented community hasn't moved on for some time, same bile, same mistrust, same wild conspiracy theories. They are beyond hope.
But there are still many on this site with a predisposition for glass half empty, a ready knack for complaining, for cynicism, for panicking. That COULD slip into the outright 'anti camp' with varying degrees of disappointment. Some might take a bit but other won't take much.
It is they, those on the margins of mistrust, that need to be carefully managed. Argyle need to give something to them to keep them onside. It can't be umpty thumpty hundreds of thousands on marquee signings because that doesn't fit the sustainability model. It needs to be a better feeling from matchdays at Home Park, more flair, more drama.
The games have been dull too often in the last couple of seasons. Now that was tolerable to the borderline anti's because we were challenging at the top. We might not be next season and if we're seen as just bobbing along AND providing a disappointing football experience I can see that the' demands' will become more prevalent.
I don't wish to sound all doom and gloom, because that's not how I personally feel about the coming season. I can however see clouds on the horizon if, say in the lead up to the January transfer window, we're not playing good football and not looking like we're comfortably holding our own in L1.
The board will not do anything rash, thank heavens, but we shouldn't congratulate ourselves on ridding Argyle of dissent and protest. While the present voices of dissent and protest are corralled amongst themselves, the potential future voices of dissent and protest are already here on this site, they just haven't 'turned' yet.
I look forward to the coming season, with hope but without expectation. I wish everyone else were going into it in the same mindset because it'll serve us well.
