You see the guy stepping on the boundary rope catching the '6' and then you see the throw in hitting the bat to go for another 4. Was meant to be wasn't it? With luck like that?
We won the WC but we didn't beat NZ.
Great game! :nworthy:

a remarkable and extraordinary cricket match played in the right spirit.the "guts" of buttler and stokes were pivotal.

Unbelievable game.

When England were chasing and lost 4 wickets at 80ish for 4 l feared for us.

Yet we did something l didn’t anticipate. We played smart cricket. Played with our “heads”

Stokes and Buttler grafted and got the score down to something manageable. Buttler then skies a shot and a wonderful catch under pressure.

The game flowed one way, then another. It looked like New Zealand’s. Then Stokes hit the ball in the air and Boult caught it, but he stood JUST on the boundary edge. Then next ball after running two it hit Stokes bat and we get an extra 4 runs.

The luck surely going in our favour with 3 runs now only needed off 2 balls. Yet somehow we could only manage two singles with brilliant fielding by New Zealand on the last ball, knowing if it’s fumbled the World Cup was ours. Under such pressure. Remarkable.

So then we had a Super Over. Just more drama than you could imagine. Stokes and Buttler again brilliant. But then New Zealand turn. After a couple of balls Neetham unleashed this marvellous six. I thought 7 runs off 4 balls was now in their favour. Eventually they were in England’s position. They needed 3 runs off 2 balls. Surely it was theirs. But then Archer produced one marvellous short pitched ball and they could only get a single. The tension must of been unbearable. Archer produces a brilliant yorker. Guptill gets it away. Now, lm not 100% sure but l thought two or three balls earlier Roy fumbled the ball in the outfield and New Zealand ran two. So surely it was in Roy’s mind again as the ball came to him. No chance. He didn’t flicker. A great throw, Buttler posed and as cool as ice, as he gather the one bounced throw and whipped the balls off with the ball inside his gloves.

The World Cup was ours. And as l just wrote what l remembered that happened l still am pinching myself because l witnessed one the greatest sporting events/games that l’ve ever going to see. It had everything. So proud to be English tonight.

Yet, spare a thought for New Zealand. They tied the match. They didn’t effectively lose the super over. It was tied and only lost because they scored less boundaries overall in a 50 over match. Their players were fabulous and very dignified. I don’t think looking back they got the rub of the green. I agree with Warne. England were the best team in the tournament, but New Zealand probably just shaded the game today.

However, if your English we have suffered many times over as sporting fans so l think this just proves that together with hard work you need a little luck to win these type of tournaments. Didn’t Australia in World Cup in 1999 in Birmingham have it? South Africa looked about to win but with 3 balls spare and one run needed Alan Donald got run out as he didn’t move from the non strikers end. Australia advanced. Australia won the final.

So luck comes in swings and roundabouts and this was just our time. As it was then for Australia. However, l’ve never felt gutted for a sport opposition against England as l do New Zealand tonight because of the fine margins we won by.

This incredible game will be remembered for ever. It had everything and England won because of two little used rules - the ball hitting Stokes' bat and going for four and the tied super over and the boundary count.

Yes, England had luck, Roy and Bairstow could have both been out in the first two overs and then the ball carried over the boundary for six and the ball rebounding of Stoke' for 4, but a winning team needs luck along the way.

Stokes will be a national hero, the public like to see
redemption and fighting spirit and he showed what hard graft can achieve.

England deserved it, their brand of attacking cricket deserved it, simply brilliant, what a game of cricket and well played NZ.

In all the euphoria remember one thing.

It would have been an easy game if just ONE of our main four batsmen had done their job!

They should hang their heads in shame.

That is very harsh. Over the tournament, all 4 made their contributions with centuries. Jos Buttler owed us an innings and he gave us one. Stokes has batted responsibly all series.
I agree with the criticism of Joe Root in the Final. As the captain of the test team and a steadying influence in a team of aggressive hitters, I was amazed that he lost his head having been lucky to survive the previous delivery.

Actually they lost less wickets than us so can feel hard done by. I was lucky enough to be there. Incredible atmosphere. One of the all time great games.

The DL system should have been used for the final.
