That in a nutshell – shows how the Brexiteers have completely & utterly missed the fundamental philosophoical point. Empires – the Roman, Mongol etc. were examples of one nation (or rather one ethnic group) dominating, subjugating and exploiting others. The EU is exactly the polar opposite. It is a collective of many nations & ethnicities that share basic principles and ideals co-operating with each other to pursue shared goals. Each gives up some sovereignty for the shared good but all receives the much greater benefits from the greater whole. For centuries those individual European nations struggled bitterly with each other for hegemony in a zero sum game of power politics that culminated in the global wars and genocides of the 20th century. Nationalism always ends in tears and tyranny.
The whole concept and founding principles of the EU was one of anti-nationalism and the noble goal of ensuring that the countries of Europe were so inter-dependent on each other the horrors of History could never be repeated. There is no EU empire – that is complete b0ll0x.
