Did you hear Pritti Patel's interview on Radio 5 where she trotted out that "economically inactive" stat? It's worth looking up - because (for once) the interviewer had fact-check information immediately to hand. She quickly dissected that 8.5 million number pointing out it included 2 million full time students, x-million (forget how many exactly) medically certificated unable to work, x-million retired & not looking for work (like HC Green) and x-million full-time carers – leaving at most 1.6 million most of whom are actually between jobs and just caught in the ‘snapshot’ statistic at any one time. In other words complete b0ll0x.......The normally supercilious Patel was a little flustered so reverted to the percentage number you've mentioned of 20% presumably just to muddy the water a bit which of course made no sense at all...... It was then followed up by an amusing text from a listener in his early sixties who had worked at HMRC Tax office for 20 years but effectively forced into early retirement when made redundant - he was asking if Pritti Patel was now telling him he now had to go and pick fruit.
