Bar all the shouting and a few tears, soon we shall see a transition of power between Trump and Biden, Republican to Democrat. It seems only fair that the new PotUS should have the same allowance of observation as the last. This will I hope show balance towards our more conservative posters to have their oversight.

For my part, I am immensely glad that Trump will not continue his divisiveness for a further 4 years. Biden would never have been my choice as the new commander in chief although I do think he will (have to) bring together both political sides of the arguments.

I would have preferred a younger person to better project a new beginning. For me someone like Pete Buttegieg (spelling) but I realise he is too ahead of his time for acceptance by the majority. Whilst I do like Harris, she does have an air to vengeance about her, her pursed lipped speech wasn’t one of welcoming the challenge but more a get out of town to Trump.

Will Biden’s term be wrecked by Mitch McConnell’s refusal to work with him? Will Biden try to force a packed Supreme Court? If the senate insist on making Biden’s presidency a lame duck affair for the full 4 year it will only weaken the states and embolden China, Russia and North Korea.

So, have at it and let’s all watch out for Joe’s tweets.

Speaking for myself, my years of Trump posts were motivated by genuine shock, horror and disgust. If the more conservative posters want to have a go at Biden on this thread then good luck to them, but I won't be leaping in to defend him because everybody knows that this will just be a presidency of relatively normal politics and the more traditional differences of opinion - like the old days! - rather than a massively corrupt existential threat to democracy itself.

I completely agree. I just want to give them the opportunity. Will it garner 2000 posts or 154 pages?

I betting if we started another Trump thread about his court cases it would still outstrip this one by 10-1.

 Indeed - and if this thread turns into a right-tard echo chamber then so be it!

(And unfortunately I think there's still plenty of life in the current Trump thread yet...)

It's nice to have a rhetoric of hope and opportunity rather than negativity and division.

Will Biden last the whole 4 years or will he get a year or so in and hand over the reigns? Will they really be able to do much without control of the Senate or will they constantly overturn everything they and the House try to do?

It's going to be interesting over the next couple of years, but if the least they can do is reverse most of Trump's idiotic moves (Paris agreement, Mexico wall, Iran nuclear deal etc) then it'll be a success.

I don't expect anything other than them returning America to where it was before Trump.

The only difference I hope for is Trump being locked up for the litany of crimes he "may have" commited in power and on his way to it. (vagueness in there for the lawyers). I still think there will be an immunity deal to get transition though.

Just a question for you Yankophiles to keep this thread bumping along until Biden starts behaving offensively (in all meanings of the word).

Can Joe just hand over to Harris, is he 'free' to act/choose?
Or does he have to be genuinely deceased/incapacitated?
Is Harris guaranteed to take over or does it need approval from the House/Houses?

Sorry Joe I know you haven't started yet!!

So he can choose to 'resign'?
Thanks Quinny.

I believe so, yes. There's a lot of talk - they've been looking into it strawngly, so strawngly - of Trump resigning pre-inauguration to allow (briefly President) Pence to pardon him of all his federal crimes. Fortunately there's no pardon power for state or civil suits, so there's still plenty of sh1t for him to face. (Would that make Pence officially POTUS 46, if only for a day, I wonder?)

Hmm, difficult to keep the two threads separate, ain't it?!

Not sure but if Trump resigns solely to allow Pence to give him a freebie, wouldn’t that in itself be a felony such as obstruction of justice and aiding and abetting same?

Former FBI chief said earlier there are things left unpublished by Mueller that would show Trump in a very, very bad way and he shouldn’t be pushing to have them brought up.

One thing about Biden that is effectively the elephant in the room is his behaviour around women and young children. Whilst I look at some of the instances and cringe I cannot believe the worst of what has been eluded to. I may be wrong of course. For my mind I remember hearing he was 29 when his wife and children were involved in a car accident and sadly his wife and daughter were killed. I truly believe this had had a sustained effect on him whereby he gets way to close to mothers and children.

I certainly expect that he will be shielded from this kind of interaction as PotUS.

Not expecting anything remotely radical or excting from Biden - he is steeped in the Washington political machine.....the most experienced President to ever take office. Everyone knows him and he knows everyone from the tea boy up, and he doesn't seem to have any real enemies. So in some ways he is the ideal person to at least have a shot at trying to heal the divisions, to cut deals and 'horse trade' with the saner elements of the GOP.

After Trump it will be a relief to just have someone rational and predictable running the most powerful country on the planet. Some vanilla is just what we need. If he can also convince most Americans there is a climate emergency and they have to change their ways then that will be a fantastic legacy. Go Joe!
