I have a problem with chlorine-washed chicken, aside from the risk to animal welfare. It is generally recognised by the science community that washing chicken in chlorinated water does not remove bacteria like salmonella. However, the bleaching process does mask the presence of the bacteria, giving a false negative.

signalspast wrote: Okay rhats fine however we already import chicken from Thailand. Should you go to sainsburys and buy a cheap ready meal you will see on the packaging it's made in the ROI but the chicken comes from Thailand.

So my question why is it fine to have chicken from thailand where the standards and food safety procedures are similar to the united states whilst we are in the EU rules but not have similar purchases from the united states when we are not.
.

What makes you think that chicken from Thailand is lesser than the US or here? According to the RSPCA, chickens are reared in better conditions in Thailand than in the UK:

UK chickens vs Thai chickens

Space: UK: About 20 chickens per square metre.; Thailand: About 14 chickens per square metre

Breeds: UK: Fast-growing breeds such as Ross 308, whose bodies grow too large for their legs, causing lameness in some; Thailand: All of a genotype that would be marketed in the UK as "slower growing."

Rest: UK: Four hours continuous darkness a night; Thailand: Six hours continuous darkness a night.

As a result of the conditions Thai chickens are reared in, they're less likely to get infections or disease, and farmers are less reliant on antibiotics.

I can't see reference to Thais washing their chicken meat in chlorinated water, except for a couple of claims in the Daily Heil. However, I'd be happy if you could point them out to me so I can read those reports.

Likewise SP no offence meant or taken.

My personal bugbear is people being labelled regardless of whether their point is valid or not.

The whole remain / leave discussion is over. All that matters now is the outcome.

We'll see soon whether it's deal or no deal. I've never seen the thing with Boris- all smoke and mirrors.

Let's see what he actually delivers.

We'll survive, but the lies for me have been staggering, even for politicians.

Boris and Gove are shameless liars and seem to have moulded the cabinet in their image.

Puerile, childish and unaccountable.

I can't remember a cabinet as poor personally

There is no evidence that the act of washing any foodstuffs with chlorine in itself is dangerous and therefore I don't have a problem with the act itself.

But as you point out above, it is futile as it doesn't work and as I pointed out in my original post, in the US they also need to use antibiotics that are banned in this country to kill off the pathogens that chlorine wouldn't touch anyway.

Our farming animal welfare practises are far more stringent in the UK where poultry sheds are completely cleaned out, sanitised and layed with fresh bedding between batches and visitors put through vigorous cleansing procedures on entering the farms and buildings. Whereas in the US they don't bother with these costly procedures in their quest for cheaper produce and quite happily reintroduce batch after batch to a deep litter bedding that can only increase the risk of disease with each new entry.
