All denied to my grandchildren by small-minded little islanders with no imagination or concern for anything outside these shores. Never thought I would ever be so ashamed to be British.

If you are so ashamed to be British why stay?

Because I don’t want to start a new life abroad at the age of 74. Perfectly reasonable.

Ah, that figures. At your age you know there is no better place to live.

Just to be clear Oldage, I may be annoyed at the leave vote, but I’m not ashamed of it. It was a clear democratic decision which I fully accept. What I’m ashamed of is the appalling handling of it by this pantomime prime minister, the ERG group, Farage and his cohorts, plus a right-wing press all suffering from truth decay.

It would appear that LP started this thread to share useful information for people in a similar position.
Perhaps the comments just moaning about brexit or how expats are referred to should stay on the other thread :sigh:

It was posted on the Opinions board, and the conditions described only exist thanks to Brexit. Of course there were going to be digressions.

And I think Quinny makes a very good point: 'migrants' here are generally tolerated at best, and ideally only in the short term; British 'expats' are seen in some kind of old colonial light.

No offence meant to LP there, by the way - just a comment about how those two different words have two very different connotations in this country, and not by accident.

Thanks Keith, exactly right. I wasn't sure of the best forum Micky, so no problem if it needs to be moved. But it would be good if this thread could stick to the point.
Expat, exile, migrant or, as I will soon be here, extracomunitario, I'm not that bothered.
Thanks for the posts that have stuck to my original intention. I don't think I'll be taking Italian citizenship though, I'm English for Christ's sake

Sorry that several of us have been guilty of broadening the scope, LP - that's just what tends to happen on this board!

I'd say that maybe it should have gone in the Coffee Bar, but I suspect that it would soon have devolved into a Brexit thread and been moved here anyway!

I just find it odd that apparently people voted leave so we have control over our borders but we aren’t going to have any controls on our only land border with a foreign country.
