I’ve long been a big fan of Jess Philips. To be honest I’m not exactly sure of her left/right credentials – but maybe that’s why. She is a ‘conviction’ politician in the best sense because she doesn’t seem at all wedded to any particular party strand in the knee-jerk Corbynista way. She’s left wing(ish) – but of the sensible, sane left variety that understand real peoples lives and treats each issue on its merits rather than always referring to the ideological play-book. She’s also funny and quick-witted in a dead-pan, matter-of-fact, Brummy way and willing to say it as it is. The fact she also once told a startled Diane Abbot in the Commons to “Just F**k Off !!” for being a “patronising cow” also gives her plenty of ticks in my book. But she can also be eloquent and her recent condemnation of Johnson’s language and behaviour in the Commons when she referenced her friend Jo Cox’s murder was powerful and very moving. She may be the wild-card and one to watch …… but I doubt she has the required backing of the Momentum gang. Pity.
