“On a side note, does anyone else see the irony in Trump visiting the Alamo today”?

Presumably he has to give back his presidential, steel plated, bullet proof limo back soon and he needs to hire a car.

70 million human beings voted for this nutter just shows the mentality of the American mind.
As for the Pence,Pompedo etc cronies they all should be put on trial for aiding and abetting this disgrace of a government.
The major players on the world stage look on willing this farce to continue as long as possible for their own enjoyment.
The under belly of America is not a pleasant sight for the world to see all aided by rich old white moneyed morons.
This whole thing is not going away very soon because of the makeup of the people in authority across the states unfortunately.

Too generalist in my opinion.

A near equal number voted against of course and I know many 'Americans' who are simply disgusted with it all. Of the number that voted 'for', you'll have a majority that simply tick 'Republican' every time. At one end of that group you probably have 5-10%ish of truly radical far right supporters. Under the hood that's probably not dissimilar in many countries - we just don't always see it. At the other end, and of more concern to me is why the relatively tiny percentage of swing voters in the US would continue to support Trump?

And for that I think you have to look at the man himself - a showman with a slogan. 'Make America Great Again' speaks to the many disenfranchised and those that feel the US has given too much in the past, a net exporter of goodwill. It also speaks to those who look back on what they remember as halcyon days for the country - where it was immune to the ills of the world, untouched by terror attacks, was revered as the leading country in world terms, and the threat of another huge economical success story half way around the world didn't exist. If you like, a version of the 'Darling Buds of May' syndrome we see here sometimes.

Regardless of whether any of that is truly valid, the world should ask itself how and why someone like this can once again seize power? As I said before, we've seen it in Europe's history. 'Never again' we say. But whilst this man's reign as leader cannot be compared in terms of outcome of course, it is once again the ringmaster tactics, dangerous rhetoric tapping in to a disenfranchised psyche that has brought him to power.

The question just asked about the American mind I find interesting. My wife and I love America and Americans, so we have toured the country extensively over the past forty years.

I find there is a simplicity and single mindedness about Americans, and I don’t mean that as a pejorative, but that they view things far more straightforwardly, with less nuance, than Europeans. They have the lowest percentage of passport holders of all the advanced economies, and you don’t have to watch much of their TV to realise how much less interested they are, compared to us, with what’s happening around the world. So their views are more likely formed by what’s happening in their immediate surroundings.

I think this accounts for their weird views on guns and religion. I met a group of perfectly intelligent folk in Arizona two years ago who genuinely believed that more guns generates fewer killings. They felt the fact that there are more guns than people in the States was a good thing, because it lowered the chance of anyone being the first user in a conflict. A staggering 37% of them are creationists. I have raised this in conversation only twice, daring to mention Darwinism, and the response was as if i’d suggested eating babies.

Another word you have to be careful of mentioning there is ‘liberal’. To many Republicans the word evokes communism, Marxism, and they regard any form of socialism as a huge threat to their freedom.

So how did all this help create Trump. It seems to me that if you’re looking for simple uncomplicated truths, and your standard of living is declining, or under threat from globalism, then a charismatic figure who offers instant scapegoats like the Washington swamp, lying politicians, immigrants, a media intent on fake news, countries like China stealing ‘our jobs’, then Trump is your instant, simple solution if you want to make America great again. And now that belief is mainstream across huge swathes of America, then Biden has a huge task on his hands uniting the country.
When a man is tired of Chudleigh, he’s tired of life.

Well, this is an interesting read. While I still don't believe the Senate will get enough votes to impeach (17 Republicans would have to vote with their Democrat colleagues as the Senate needs a 2/3rds split to impeach, rather than a simple majority in the House), that 5 Republican senators have already called for Trump to be impeached, and McConnell leaning towards that himself (if what's being leaked is true), then the vote could be a lot closer than some expect: certainly enough to permanently damage the Trump name and legacy.

Whatever ends up happening, I think that the most important result that can come out of all of this is that Trump be permanently barred from holding any kind of office ever again. If he's still able to run in 2024 (in which case he's certain to announce his candidacy the moment that Biden is sworn in) then it will just be utter mayhem all over again. It will be anyway, even if he is barred, but he'll have considerably less access to, and influence over, the public psyche as plain old Mr Trump with no legal political platform and no viable social media presence.

For that matter, first he could simply run for the Senate in just two years and be guaranteed to be voted in by a massive majority in a carefully selected deep red state. Just imagine! (I literally just thought of that, and now I feel sick... I'm sure that McConnell and others already have, though, and no doubt it's influencing their thinking, as the scales finally tip away from Trump. It really is now or never.)

And on a procedural matter: the 2/3 Senate majority required to vote Trump out is of those present. If, say, 25 GOP senators didn't want to go on the record as having voted for Trump's ouster (an Americanism I've picked up!) but somehow conveniently didn't make it to the chamber for the vote, a simple 50-25 vote would see him gone.

Edited to add: All of these speculations rely on Trump staying out of prison, of course. Sadly, and much as I'd absolutely love to see it, I just can't imagine it actually coming to pass. Far too much "politics" flying around.

I didn't realise that! But then I should have, thinking back to when they voted to confirm Barratt to the Supreme Court...

You would think, and expect these Senators would have some guts, and turn up, and register their
vote and disgust at Trump, and vote for impeachment.

Some already will, let’s hope the majority will.

So... Trump now accounts for 50% of all the impeachments in US history.

I didn't know that either. Interesting to see if a number of Republicans suddenly become very 'COVID conscious' and reluctantly have to self-isolate for some reason when the vote happens (even the a-holes who refused to wear masks when locked in a small crowded room for hours hiding from the mob on the Jan 6th).
Smarter people than I have been total idiots - and I've met them all.
