Good on you Joe.

On the 21st jan, Trump should be arrested, as his crimes he has committed are stacking up.

I am being serious.

Lock him up, lock him up! Now complaining that Biden is prematurely and falsely claiming victory. Couldn't make it up.

I've just watched Biden's speech, which was genuinely uplifting and wonderfully presidential. It would be literally impossible for Trump to make a speech even remotely approaching that level of eloquence and emotional generosity; and of course the entire spectacle of the event just served to reinforce the fact that Biden will be the next president, and that anything further that Trump now attempts via the courts to delegitimise the result will look even more spiteful and desperate than it already did.

Totally inspiriting contrast to Trump and added to by Kamala Harris speech breaking through the glass ceiling in so many ways, breathing a belief for all of us in the future.

So refreshing to hear words of hope, togetherness, love and empathy rather than insipid words of blame, division, hate and victimhood.

Looks like Donny's lost Rupey, which is good news for peace and democracy.

Rupert Murdoch-owned US outlets turn on Trump, urging him to act with 'grace'

The new messaging appears to be closely coordinated, and it includes an appeal to Trump to preserve his “legacy” by showing grace in defeat. The message is being carried on Fox News and in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post – all outlets avidly consumed by Trump himself, especially Fox.

I wonder if Neil Kinnock wrote it for him  .

Have to say I think some of the outpouring of emotion is somehwat overstated. He's a nearly man who is getting his chance - a steady eddie who is not without his own controversy in the Clarence Williams hearing.

I suspect the best he can achieve is to get America somewhere back towards where it was 4 years ago but I wouldn't expect radical change. Great that Trump has gone, but offering some perspective, I'd be more interested if Kamala Harris had the number one job.

I don't much disagree with any of that, although I think the reaction is perfectly understandable. (I got through a fair bit of champagne myself last night!) For the moment the world is just celebrating the fact that someone - anyone - has defeated Trump. Everything else pales into relative insignificance in comparison, and is for later.

Speaking of defeat, CNN has just reported that Jared Kushner has approached Trump to try to persuade him to concede. I'm sure he won't but the fact that it was Kushner who made the approach is very significant, I think. He was, after all, the one who was phoning around just the other day desperately searching for a "James Baker-like" supremo to coordinate the legal onslaught that they were planning - and that Trump still is.

Hmm, interesting. Now NBC is reporting the opposite:

A source close to Jared Kushner tells NBC News that Kushner “has advised [President Trump] to pursue his legal remedies” to the election.

Maybe I'm guilty of speculation but I think I can guess the reason: Trump went absolutely ballistic, melted off Kushner's pallid, waxy skin with his uncontrolled screaming, and forced Kushner to issue a public statement supporting him. Doesn't bode well, does it?

That's how I see it. Biden is a steady Eddy, a safe pair of hands for four years while a new younger candidate is groomed for the top job or until Harris takes over, maybe even before the four years is up.

Really refreshing to watch the news and see an adult taking rather than a petulant man-baby.

In all his time what has Trump achieved that's made America a better place?

He's completely polarised society to the point where you you can't even wear a mask without people shouting at you.

He's belittled scientists, mocked the disabled and basically bullied women and minorities.

It's not party political. Trump just doesn't seem to like other people. His whole life seems to be transactional and he appears in need of professional help.

Biden's made mistakes and will no doubt make others, but he acknowledges them and seeks to do better.

When has Trump ever admitted anything or sought to reconcile a situation?

His "gift from God" has killed many thousands and his politicising of mask wearing etc was puerile.

Time to let an adult take the reins at last
Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies!

I don't know how many will have seen this but I happened to catch it live yesterday. (Or maybe the early hours of this morning - I forget...) I'd already said to Mrs D that it suddenly feels as if we're back living in a different world again; but to see seasoned lawyer and CNN presenter Van Jones break down brought home just how much Trump's imminent removal means to so many people in America. It's not just about the four years that have just passed; it's about the utter hell that the next four years - and possibly many more - would have unleashed.

CNN's Van Jones brought to tears as Joe Biden wins US election

And in a very different vein, here's SNL's post-election cold open, also from last night

Did you see Giuiliani's ludicrous press conference yesterday (where he was ranting about illegal votes conspiracies yaddah yaddah)?

Well the most remarkable thing about it was it was held in the car park of the 'Four seasons' garden centre - situated between a crematorium and porn store  ...... apparently they confused it with the very posh Four Seasons hotel in the city
Social media is hailing the person at the garden centre who took the booking without correcting them as a hero :nworthy:
Smarter people than I have been total idiots - and I've met them all.
