My bet is that the rational heads in the GOP who will be desperate to get back into power will recognise that full-on Trumpism is a handicap to their ambitions and will seek to distance themselves rather than something to be repeated.
Agreed. Different sides of the political debate and perhaps not quite as signififcant, but not too dissimilar to Corbynism and the Labour Party. Extremism has limited appeal for most sensible people.
There was debate on here some time back on whether Trump was stupid or clever. Many suggested he was dumb and plenty in the media and public gaze have mocked him. I always thought that a mistake. He may not be intellectually bright, but that doesn't make him stupid. Indeed, he knows how to expolit minority concerns, create a siege mentality and motivate crowds with his rhetoric. That isn't stupid, it's dangerous. Europe has seen it's share of people with similar characteristics - modest intelligence but dangerously convincing to those that will listen.
The Republican Party has a job on its hands.
