Sidney Powell was one of the loudest exponents of Trump's Big Lie that the election was stolen by fraud, a lie that led directly to the Capitol insurrection, has tens of millions of Americans still believing it to be true, and is now forming the very backbone of Republican strategy, in Congress and around the country where GOP legislatures are doing ther best to enact brutally suppressive voter laws suposedly "to restore faith in the system" but in reality designed to be the only way they can get elected to anything ever again.

You can see why Trump and all those embroiled in his vast sordid criminal enterprise were so desperate to destroy democracy and install an autocracy: it was the only way that they could avoid justice. Powell herself famously claimed several times that she was about to "release the Kraken" but I don't think that $1.3 billion lawsuits against her were quite what she was expecting.

And to think that Trump was seriously considering appointing her as special counsel to investigate voter fraud allegations. Presumably she turned him down, saying something on the lines of, "Sorry, Donald, everyone knows it's just a pack of lies really, so there's nothing to investigate, you silly old goose."

She really should have known better spouting such rubbish, but then I suppose she genuinely believed she had Trump to protect her. Now she's backpedalling like mad as she discovers just how little stock Trump places in loyalty from his followers (as those facing legal action from the storming of the Capitol are also finding out).
