Best places to live..Exeter 10th

In the country apparently though I am a bit confused.

Listening to radio Devon yesterday I heard this story quite a bit as I travelled around for work and listened in disbelief as Exeter was found to be a better place to live than York or Oxford for example. The radio DJs interviewed someone from Exeter tourist board who said the advantage of living in Exeter (as opposed to Plymouth by inference) was that it was about an hour by road closer to Bristol and London and with great rail and air links.... well this got me thinking that if the reasons for being a great place to live is measured by how easy it is to get to somewhere else how can it be so great in the first place.

Nationally, I've not spent a great deal of time north of Gloucester and I don't know any of the other top ten but if I had to choose somewhere else to live ( money no object) then somewhere like Bath would certainly be more appealing than Exeter. I've also had to drive to Weymouth and Bournemouth recently and there are plenty of little villages along the Jurassic coast that could compete for a share of my lottery winnings as I slow down into upper middle age.

So money no object, where in this country would you move to if you were told you had to live away from Plymouth?

I lived in Huddersfield for a while. Beautiful countryside, loads of big towns with easily accessible football teams. People were friendly. I really liked it there ... but it's not home and there's no seaside.

Elgin and the Moray Firth. Super nice people and wonderful beaches and sea life.
