What is it with all these footballers causing trouble at nightclubs. I just went to look on BBC Sport and there was two articles on there about Fuller and Carroll at Newcastle. They are sposed to be proffessional footballers and more importantly role models to kids, perhaps they should start acting like it.

I can't think of any profession least likely to provide role models for kids.

People don't get drunk and cause trouble because Gascoigne and Woodgate did - they do it because they can't handle their drink. In a culture where drinking as much as you can as quickly as you can is seen as something to boast about, and 'pacing yourself' or complete abstinence are treated with near contempt, this is not really surprising.

In fact, the fondness for the drinking culture can be seen in football's biggest hypocrisy. The press vilify young players if they have a drink and cause trouble. But who do they hold in the highest regard? Who do they point to as the real 'heroes', the 'true characters' of the modern game? George Best and Paul Gascoigne seem to be the recurring names.

It's notable that rock stars and actors do far worse things, to themselves and to other people, yet the same criticisms are not levelled at them. For some reason footballers are supposed to be the beacons of good behaviour for our kids to learn from, while Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty can behave appallingly by comparison, with very little criticism.

Many footballers are just kids....

Wonder who their role models should be? Parents?

Get a life.
If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

They are entitled to a night on the sauce now and again. They are the same as you or i,unless you are an old fuddy duddy.

What next, all proffessional types not allowed to enjoy themselves??...
Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfils the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.

I'm sure the club (and the management) will have certain rules and expectations for the players - look at the 3 players Holloway dropped, last week.

That being said, I do have some sympathy for players who do go out - you can bet some pished-up mouthy gobshyte will have a go at them at some point. For all we know, neither Fuller or Carroll started the incidents, but the gutter-press being what it is...
