One quick question...

When subscribing to the mailing list for this, why does the welcome e-mail say:

Thank you for your subscription. You are now signed up to my newsletter, and will get great tips, tricks, and strategies a few times a month. Hope you get some value out of it! It's where ALL of my best posts go!

Sounds like it's part of a betting scam rather than a group of Argyle supporters!

Been away for a few days, and am trying to catch up, so forgive me if I haven't got up to scratch.

New organisation called the Green Taverners. Run by group of Argyle fans who wish to keep a low profile. The usual suspects say they are great guys. The other usual suspects spout negativity.

I'm all for something new, and am trying to be positive. I sign up for newsletters etc. There is a donate button. What am I donating to? What are the objects, aims and asperations of the GTs? How much money do they want? What realistically is achievable? This post may be pedantic but it's not meant to be negative at all. I'd just like to know more and make my own judgement on how far to get involved.

We will try and answer all your questions Xmastree

Green Taverners is not a trust or a charity it is a group of true Argyle fans who all have the decided to come together and try to raise money to support initially the first team, with things like travel, training equipment, physio training, first aid equipment...etc

We are raising money by holding events like the fundraising evening this Friday and also the Fan Fest on 26th against Colchester, we didn't initially have a donate button on the site, but we had several requests from people for it and we added it.

As is always the case there will be people who love the idea and people who hate it, but we know what we are doing we are doing with the right intentions.

Also just to clarify we are not in competition with the Argyle Trust and are actually talking to them and we have offered to help each other where we can.

Another thing we are trying to do is some running repairs to things around the ground, we have just completed repairing the roof in the lounge toilets. We have also communicated with the club about a few other jobs that need doing that we will be funding as Green Taverners.

I hope this helps explain a little more about what and why we are doing it.

I would also just like to add thanks to everyone who has supported the project so far and also thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help in any way.

Aside from that rant, I am not totally against charity, gawd knows I've done enough work for certain charities over the years, but I call a halt in my support with certain bodies. I had a pop at the Lions/Rotary diners model of charity because they are often stuffed full of local businesmen 'wanting to 'do good' while at the same time lobbying for lower personal taxes and cuts in public spending. Some of them are even still men only. No wonder the Rotary club have difficulty attracting members under 60 these days. That sort of model is old hat and old politics ... almost Victorian in it's philosophy ... just what Dave Cameron wants brought back, and now it seems, Peter Ridsdale. Funny how all these reuests have gone out from "staff" since he arrived.

However, this Argyle thing is a joke. How on earth they can market the idea of PAFC travel to matches as a charity is beyond belief.
It would even be understandable if we were a Supporters' Trust owned club, but we're not, we're owned by multi millionaires. Wake up some of you. They're not paying staff and they're asking the OAPs to pay for the upkeep of the pitch !! And now they have encouraged this . Have they no shame ?
To me I see the Green Taverners as nothing more than a glad-handing social opportunity that is little more than the rebranding of yet more corporate hospitality. Is that clear enough Andy S

Firstly, to The Green Taverners, I apologise for "hijacking" the thread but at this time, there is no where else that I can respond to the above diatribe.

Where oh where to begin.

You know something Jack, you really are ignorant. I don't mean that in an abusive way, merely that you really don't have a clue what the hell you are talking about.

I've waited until now to reply because this evening, 3rd Wednesday of every month, is our "food and fellowship" evening. We had a joint meeting with another club and I would have thought that the average age was probably around 35 - 40. I'm actually one of the oldest at 60! Oh! And we have girlies as well.

So that's TWO parts of your idiotic rant shot to pieces.

"Dressing up"???? What like, as in putting on a jacket and tie? Well, I suppose it could be construed as "dressing up". However, I was the only one there this evening with a jacket and tie. The others in open necked shirts, a couple of the guys were even in shorts. I have to say that the ladies looked radiant.

So, we don't dress up either Jack. Looking a bit woeful for you really, isn't it.

So, what else don't you know about Lions then Jack?

Membership? Do you know how many members there are Jack? Probably not, so let me enlighten you.

1.3 MILLION Jack, which is actually about 4 times the number of Rotary members and we are growing by around 47,000 members Worldwide every year.

I'll tell you something else Jack. Not only is Lions the largest Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) in the World, it is the ONLY, get this, the ONLY NGO to be give a PERMANENT seat at the United Nations.

Lions have no interest in any members politics or religion Jack. ALL Lions clubs are apolitical and there is no register ANYWHERE about a members political or religious views OR about their ethnicity. Black, white, yellow, red, pink or even green with a TV aerial sticking out of their head - it makes not the slightest bit of difference. Although having said that, the latter would certainly be a good draw for raising funds!

Having said that, we do, at the beginning of each Dinner Meeting, give thanks to God for our food and fellowship.

My club, Kamo, is small compared to some however, in the two years that I have been President, we have raised AND given away, well in excess of $90,000. It is something that I am very proud of.

Of course, some Lions clubs DO have older members, in New Zealand these clubs are called "Pakeke" (Pahkeykey) it is Maori for "Elders", they are the "wise ones, the mentors" for the younger members.

There are also thousands and thousands of LEO clubs. Guess what Jack - the members of THESE clubs are really old. 18 - 23 years old Jack. Really old.

So, there you go Jack. As usual, you talk through your rectal orifice on a subject that you know absolutely nothing at all.

I would be more than happy to discuss Lions with you at any time Jack, sadly though as with every other subject on which you make a fool of yourself, you never bother to reply to anything.

Again, my apologies Green Taverners.
There is no argument to equal a happy smile!
