Today's Herald (Paul Stapleton Interview)

Is going to be worth buying. The first part of an exceedingly long interview with Stapes is going to be in there.

The man has broken his silence at last!

No link yet because the Herald hasn't been updated.

He also revealed how Argyle had been poised to sack manager Paul Sturrock nearly a year before he was eventually axed – only for their unfolding financial crisis to make the move too costly. Mr Stapleton told The Herald: "My biggest regret was being introduced to Keith Todd. In two years, everything we built up over the previous years crashed so devastatingly.

"What's the single biggest thing that went wrong? In my view it has to be the way the club was run. It has to be Keith Todd."

Blimey - it's like the Alan Sugar Apprentice boardroom revelations.

Intruiging read, but would be more interesting if Mr Toad responded.

Not me Guv!

Is Stapleton paving the way for a return to the Board? There's probably a glowing tribute to Ridsdale in part two of the interview.

The time frame in which Stapleton talks about is far too long for him just to do nothing.
Each and every one of the Shameful Seven are to blame, hold your hands up Stapes and admit it! Pathetic!

At least we will get a 100 pager in off season :)

Although Stapleton has to obviously take some of the responsibilty, a lot of what he says makes sense and I have always thought that Toad got away with not taking as much flak on here as he deserved, he's got one of those faces you just want to slap.

Still no apology, none at all for putting the staff through hell. Amazing really, wouldnt take much humilty to devote a line or two to show regret for them and maybe, just maybe a thanks to the fans for their sterling efforts to raise money to assist.

Although a Stapleton fan over the years, I hope this isnt a charm offensive to deflect all the blame to prepare the way for a return.

Nearly brought Poyet in? Interesting.

Even if you are being outvoted...you don't have to take it lying down....did he fight tooth and nail against every bad decision....did he see the world cup bid as a bad idea or did pounds signs light up in his eyes

In fact why did he let 51% (together with the other board members) of the shares go....neither he or the other local directors needed to let that happen

Gus Poyet really? It wouldn't be mentioning that at all if he had just lead Brighton to promotion

Is was he who wanted to get rid of Sturrock really? Would have been more interested to hear if he did continue to meet up with and take advice from Sturrock after he left the first time....leaving others feel undermined

Once he knew the Gardiner/Todd/Japanese axis were hostile and heading in the wrong dierction and leaving him and others impotent....why didn't he speak out or resign from the board....too much to lose perhaps?

Agreed. It's what he doesn't say. As for throwing in the Poyet carrot, we had Holloway & Pulis before him but neither of them believed in the ship that Stapes built.
By the time Holloway and his players jumped ship, even Stapleton knew there was money needed to have a real chance at the level and to get the missing thousands to believe the club meant business. He didn't want to miss out out the possibility of someone else's money paying for success and property development and so the New World was a bodged deal from the outset.
Stapes and his chums had money in the bank and they still had their fingers in the pie.
They should have looked to sell to a Manderic type years before but they got greedy.

Stay away. :x

Slaughter him if you want I have no agenda other than it was bleeding obvious Todd should shoulder the majority of the blame. The only priority he had was the World Cup bid appointing Mariner after Luggys disastrous second coming was a ridiculous decision.

Extraordinary. As in an ordinary interview might have involved at least some uncomfortable questions (eg how are the chaps up at the charity commission?) in return for media coverage at a key stage of these turbulent times, rather than a mere notedown of exactly what the interviewee did and didn't want to publicly pass on. Press power's all relative I spose, but getting the story seemed absolute submission.

Annnyhow, knocking others for lack of prudence in running his business. Surely the one thing PS brought to the HP table on day 1 let alone year 8 or 9 was how to implement and and then check the prudence aspect, but no, infact only the ability to kick closed the stable door and mutter selectively way afer the event. Keeps few fires burning, does it.

The ship's still sinking, but it's a little lighter without this guy on board.
