Had to pish myself laughing at UKIP getting outraged at this week's Parliament recall and the debate/vote on Friday about the crisis with ISIS (ooh - I'm a poet, and I didn't know it). The more paranoid members of UKIP (most of them) seem certain that it was chosen then on purpose to coincide with UKIP's party conference at the prestigious Doncaster Racecourse and, more importantly, Farage's speech to the party. Except they've got nothing to be outraged about: they don't have any sitting MP's, the vote in Westminster doesn't affect them one little bit. Apart from Farage's ego.

I think the point (and it's a very good one) that Knarf is making is that if he were asked to leave because he wasn't white then there would be uproar, arrests, media coverage etc etc.

While it shouldn't cut either way, racism does cut both ways in Britain culturally, thankfully only in small dosages.

Reminds me of the time I was arrested on a train from Observatory to Cape Town for sitting in a blacks only carriage - this was in 1969.

It is only his interpretation that he was asked to leave because he was white. If he felt so strongly about it your point about media coverage would equally apply from the same gutter press that you're referring to. I am fairly sure that if it was as Frank says, and with his views, he would have been certain to make sure that everyone and their dog knew about it. It is far more likely (if the story is true) that Frank was removed for any number of other reasons. I have drunk in many predominantly Asian pubs in Leicester, Bradford, Leeds and Nottingham and have never been asked to leave but then I'm generally respectful, tolerant and polite even when drunk!

And this is the big problem I have with all the 'ISM' labels

Exactly this.

Except, well, I have been known to be slightly disrespectful when drunk. But not enough to be thrown out...often anyway.

There is no way that papers like The Sun, The Star, The Mail, The Express, even The Telegraph and The Times would not be interested in running a story where a person was kicked out of somewhere because they were white. Cobi seems to think that the 'mass media' is all full of some kind of anti-white agenda where they only report white on black incidences but that could not be further from the truth. All of the papers I name constantly engage in race-baiting, are the furthest thing from PC that is is possible to be. They would most certainly run with the above story. It'd look nice next to all the stories they run about 'grooming gangs' and 'Muslim hate preachers'. Even Nick Robinson of the so called liberal BBC today made a point of saying that a Labour MP who resigned in protest of the ISIS war vote today 'is also a Muslim'. By bringing her religion up, he's clearly insinuating that her being a Muslim is a reason why she opposed war with ISIS and therefore further insinuating that all Muslims are in some way connected to ISIS. He wouldn't have brought her religion into it unless he thought it was a significsnt factor of her identity. Why would Nick Robinson do that in this make believe, politically correct world in which 'the mass media' are apparently scared to ever say anything against Muslims?

Papers do dig out Asians and Muslims all the time. The idea that some kind of ethic of political correctness would stop them from doing so is false and completely absurd. You refer to 'there would be media uproar' if a person of colour was being victimised...there is regularly media uproar against Muslims on a regular basis in this country's media. The system works literally the opposite of how you (Cobi) are saying it does.

Sam - I would say that's more to do with the inference you have taken.

As for the last part quoted ? Oh dear .....

Would he bring up religion if a Christian resigned in protest against the vote? Or a jew? Or even a non-believer.

That last part might have been a bit emotively worded on my part but the only reason that the Muslim aspect is brought up is if that's considered to be a significant reason for someone to not want war with ISIS.

It's not blatant, but to me it reads like dog whistle stuff. Not clearly worded but insinuated enough to bring up ugly sentiments.

Nah, read to me like an over-sensitive appraisal of Robinson's words that was typical of the information age, where every word is scrutinised to the nth degree - because it can be. A situation that makes people ever fearful of how they might be perceived in public, thus blunting the possibility of open, honest communication, debate and understanding.

Which, for me, is symptomatic of today's global challenges.....
