Currently, we are debating whether to replace our current Trident missile system with a new system at an even greater cost, based on a defence strategy from the 1950. This week's advents in Brussels demonstrate that our greatest threat over the next 10-20 years will be international terrorist attacks, for which Trident and its replacement is totally unsuited. If we take: New York, London, Madrid, Paris, Brussels and the Middle East, these all require a complete rethink on the type of defence system required to keep us all safe.
There is only one system that goes some way in full filling our requirements and that is 'Intelligent's and this means new spy satellites, communications and good old fashion ground personnel, backed up by heavily armed quick response troops, specially trained to take out enemy combatants.
We have in the UK: GCHQ MI5, MI6 all of which are totally underfunded to carry out what is required over the coming years, to adequately protect us.
If anybody has insight into approx cost of running the above as opposed to the vast sums sent on the current Trident programme, it would certainly highlight how out of balance our defence funding is.
