On last night's defeat Alan Shearer said:
"We are blinded by the Premier League. We think it's the best in the world for talent. It's not. We are totally reliant on foreign players and managers for excitement. We are not as good as we think we are."
On last week's tragedy this particular Alan dares to paraphrase:
"52% of us were blinded by our imperial past and smug assumptions about the Bulldog spirit always helping England to come out on top, about really being that little bit better than mere foreigners. We are not. We think we're the best in the world, but much of what works well in the UK is reliant on foreign imports to help it work. We are not as good as we think we are."
Not so much a football game, more a metaphor.
