There is a very interesting series of talks just started on TED by Yuval Noah Harari on Nationalism Vr Globalism which is worth watching. The first one was a very powerful argument and certainly you need to be focused to absorb it fully.

Haven't seen the program but the European union was born out of nationalism with Germany and France combining to protect their coal and steel industries. All great dynasties have collapsed eventually due to nationalism.

I'm not sure you're right there signals post. My understanding was that the motivation behind the coal and steel Union was to make France and Germany so economically inter-dependant that it would help ensure there would never be a third war between them. The Atlee and subsequent Churchill governments fully supported this move.

Two countries joining to work together would be the opposite of nationalism, wouldn't you have thought

I've never understood nationalistic values etc.

I don't care much for a flag or feel nationalistic in any way at all, don't care too much for Engerland in any way

I do feel a greater affinity for people, whatever nationality they are and for my roots in terms of how a place and it's people make me feel

I care not a jot for a 'union' either
