Would be a great signing but 66 miles or 276 miles from home, an 85 minute drive or a 5 hour drive? We would have to offer more than Shrewsbury to tempt him for sure.

Reasons Pennington should come to Argyle rather than Shrewsbury;-

1. We should be able to offer a better wage
2. We should on paper be a better team and certainly more ambitious next season than Shrewsbury - Lowe has said he wants to be challenging in the top half of the table next season. - which is better to play in a team than wins more mentally and also financially to a player with win bonusses
3. We will have around double the average crowd that Shrewsbury do next season and far better stadium and possibly training facilities than Shrewsbury - how great would it be to play in front of 18-20k for big matches next season - and there are a fair few of them.
4. Being from the North West of England he'll hopefully be able to understand our manager's accent
5. Plymouth is nicer than Shrewsbury
6. Could be best friends with Conor Grant as they are the same age and were at Everton from 18 year olds.
7 The famous Green Army to support you on your travels

There's also the Neil Dewsnip connection who would have been in charge of the Everton Academy when Pennington was coming through as a youth player.

Jesus Christ.

Footballers don’t tend to care about the size of the club they are signing for. It’s all about the contract offered.

27. SPL and Championship experience. This is the right profile of player. Whether he's any good I don't know.

He appears to be going back home to Aberdeen.

Fair enough. Was more of a general point, that at least this target fits the profile we should be looking for.

But what about if the contract offered by 2 clubs is about the same?

Wouldn't you rather play for a club that wins more so you get bigger wage bonuses and also the chance to play in a higher league and therefore command a greater salary.?

I honestly think that as well as the obvious financial aspects, footballers would rather play in front of bigger crowds in better stadia.

I'm sure they would but if the two contracts offered were roughly the same it would be even less reason for him to uproot from his local area. At the end of the day the financial package will be the main consideration in almost all cases.

As they say, the best form of defence is attack. The more of those, the less need Argyle have for big mobile  defenders

I can see the Evelyn Erole headline now after a Tuesday night home win:
Burns Night! ;)

As you say our problem is the wee sleekit cowering timorous beasties at the back!

I thought Burn's 30 career goals at 26 years old was not too inspiring but it seems Joey Barton used him mainly as a right back or midfielder in his 3 years at Fleetwood.

According to Fleetwood Town site they have activated an option on his contract for another 12 months. That would mean a fee for Wes Burns if we were interested in signing him.

Apparently he's more of a Right Back than a forward. Younger Byron Moore replacement anyone.?

Unfortunately this has proven not to work for Argyle. You need strong foundations, like a good defence, on which to build the rest of the team.
