1) Start for Vyner ahead of Songo'o in the absence of the unfortunate Edwards. Church took a place on the bench alongside returning Taylor-Sinclair and Cooper, who retained his place despite Letheren's fitness. Wylde and Jervis the ones making way. All the players wore "Edwards 5" training tops. A nice touch. Argyle support on 5 minutes was class.
2) Wigan were lucky to keep 11 men on the pitch when two ugly fouls in quick succession left Sarcevic and Taylor on he ground. They survived as clearly the referee hadn't seen it. Officials failed to see a foul off the ball on Carey and then a clear foul on Fox in the build up to their second. The penalty was so obvious that it wasn't even an even-ing up of the game.
3) Carey's penalty was well placed and sent Walton the wrong way but a silly free-kick on the halfway gave Wigan their first, a ball played across the defence. Their second was similar but from the other side of the pitch. No free-kick but Fox was moved out of the way illegally before the cross was put in.
4) I felt Argyle had the best of the first 45 and were unlucky not to be further ahead when the penalty went in. Lameiras guilty of over playing it at times. Taylor battled well too but with little assistance from the referee. Vyner had one plundering run forward and otherwise looked solid. He's certainly got some learning to do but you can see the potential.
5) Sarcevic was limping for a good part of the first half and I half expected to see Songo'o come out for the second. As it was it was deep into the second half before the poor Lameiras was replaced by Ainsworth. With 5 to go Grant replaced Taylor who had another good game, when allowed to by the referee.
6) Wigan continued their strong arm tactics and picked up three quick yellow cards including one for an incident in the tunnel at half-time. A Carey free-kick was pushed away by Walton and then Sawyer almost chipped Matthews but the ball bounced just over the bar. Sarcevic managed to put a good 1v1 chance over.
7) Argyle were still playing quite well but the need to push forward was playing into Wigan's hands through their counter-attacking play. Lameiras had a poor game and kept trying the complicated when the obvious was the better choice. The limited nature of the midfield trio was exposed at times.
8 ) The third came from a corner with Vyner deflecting a header into his own net. Argyle ran out of ideas and Adams flung on Church for Ness. Ness and Sarcevic had poor second halves and Cook proved the better tactician. We didn't deserve to lose by 2 goals but we looked clueless once the third went in. Wigan weren't exceptional and I think had we had Diagouraga.....
9) Argyle finally met a team who could finish and Wigan were a step up from recent opposition. We need a replacement for Diagouraga, Ness and Sarcevic are not at the standard to go forward if Adams is going to persist with this formation but most of us knew that. We did well in the first half but were second best for the second 45.
