A Grimsby forum has a good league finishing position calculator - we all used it last season, there's not many good results calculators around.

You can predict just Argyle's results for each game and let the calculator automatically predict the results for all other League One games or actually predict every game yourself.

I was conservative with my Argyle predictions and we finished 5th on 72 points.

I used this, and let the calculator predict all results (just select no teams and click through). It calculated we would finish 5th on 74 and would play against Rotherham (76) in the playoffs. Blackburn Rovers (78) vs Bristol Rovers (73) in the other. 7th place was Scunthorpe on 70 points.

Auto fill all the results has us finishing 6th on 77, playing Blackburn in the playoffs, but thats only on GD

Pos Team P GD Pts

2 Shrewsbury 46 +24 88
3 Blackburn 46 +28 84
4 Rotherham 46 +20 78
5 Portsmouth 46 +13 77
6 Plymouth 46 +10 77
7 Scunthorpe 46 +18 76
8 Bradford 46 -1 68
9 Bristol Rovers 46 +0 66
10 Gillingham 46 +0 63

Always with these predictor things there is a bias towards top of the league teams and stretching out the table because it is difficult to think of a system of when and where surprises will happen so the inclination is always to go with the team that is higher in the league, but in the reality the form book gets turned upside down all the time. I ended up with Wigan, Shrewsbury, and Blackburn on 103, 102, and 95, and Fleetwood finishing 20th on 46! Unbelievable Jeff.

For Argyle I had us 5th on 77, which is 31 from the last 13, one more than we have got from the last 13. That would mean W10 D1 L2, I had us losing at Charlton and Gillingham (final day when playoff place done) and drawing at Scunthorpe, winning the rest.

To be honest I doubt that'll happen but would be fun if it did!!

I predict we make Wembley and then suffer the empty pain again.

Even if we did lose at Wembley, I'd take that after the way we started in the season

Definitely something fishy going on with this as I did the same thing but got us in 6th on 73 points so different to you and Mr Gyle ... :eh:

I’ve got us finishing 6th on 76pts, 2points ahead of Peterborough in 7th. I do also have Charlton finishing 10th somehow, so I’m way off. It’s probably going to go down to the last game.

I would guess that it has some built in randomness when autofilling results and so things pan out slightly differently each time. There is a mathematical technique called Monte Carlo analysis that runs simulations with built-in randomness many, many times and then looks at the spread of outcomes to get a better handle on what is most likely to happen. It is a form of ensemble averaging. A lot of weather forecasts use the same approach because there is a big chunk of randomness (actually mathematical chaos so not strictly pure randomness) in atmospheric dynamics which makes it theoretically impossible to accurately predict beyond a few days. Anyway, back to the football. If lots of people run the simulation with the same setting and we pool all of the predictions we should get a much more robust idea of where we will finish. Currently, from what I am reading, 5th place looks nailed on... ;)

the big imponderable is injuries, if we continue our injury free run and the key players remain fit to the end of the season I think we will be in the play-offs - we may drop the odd point through bad luck, but at the moment we are better than any other team in the league

I forecast all the results and got this:

Pos Team P GD Pts
1 Wigan 46 +56 104
2 Blackburn 46 +35 92
3 Shrewsbury 46 +29 92
4 Scunthorpe 46 +15 80
5 Plymouth 46 +11 78
6 Portsmouth 46 +10 76

Interesting!! (but very unscientific!!) :scarf:
