Games in Hand - Table

Here's a table of the maximum number of points that each team could have after the same number of games as Argyle.

It assumes that each team will win ALL of their games in hand. Obviously this is impossible. The table is designed to show the worst case scenario for how many points each team could have.

If all teams had played 33 games (games in hand in brackets)

1) Wigan 72pts (3 games in hand)
2) Shrewsbury 70 (2)
3) Blackburn 66 (1)
4) Rotherham 59 (1)
5) Scunthorpe 55 (0)
6) Charlton 54 (2)
7) Peterborough 51 (2)
8) Bradford 50 (0)
9) Portsmouth 49 (1)
10) Bristol Rovers 48 (1)
11) Gillingham 47 (1)
12) ARGYLE 47 (0)
13) Walsall 46 (2)
14) Oxford 44 (1)
15) Southend 44 (1)
16) Fleetwood 42 (2)
17) Blackpool 41 (1)
18) Rochdale 40 (5)
19) Doncaster 39 (0)
20) Wimbledon 37 (1)
21) Oldham 36 (0)
22) MK Dons 36 (2)
23) Northampton 36 (0)
24) Bury 29 (1)

Naturally the ppg figure is far higher for the top teams than the bottom (roughly 2 to roughly 1), so for any really in-form teams that Argyle need to worry about from now on, let's say 2.5 ppg.

Does it help knowing who those games in hand are against?

If you award a 2-0 win in every game outstanding to the team currently placed higher in the table, Argyle will be then be 10th. Peterborough would be in the last play-off place, 4 points ahead.

Perhaps it is because I only look at Argyle that I think that year after year we always seem to have played a game or two more than most other teams. Maybe it is our lacklustre FA Cup record, our balmier weather or in recent years our excellent pitch?

I'd rather have points on the board rather than games in hand.

What is the average points per game? 1.4? Be interesting to see that table on that basis.

Projected table based on current points per game.

96.6 Wigan Athletic
95.0 Shrewsbury Town

90.6 Blackburn Rovers
80.5 Rotherham United
76.7 Scunthorpe United
71.2 Charlton Athletic

69.7 Bradford City
66.8 Peterborough United
66.1 Portsmouth
65.5 Argyle
64.7 Bristol Rovers
63.3 Gillingham
59.4 Walsall
58.9 Oxford United
58.9 Southend United
54.6 Blackpool
54.4 Doncaster Rovers
53.4 Fleetwood Town
50.2 Oldham Athletic
50.2 Northampton Town

48.9 AFC Wimbledon
44.5 MK Dons
41.1 Rochdale
37.4 Bury

Two points a game from here on in gets us to 73.

I think we need to win 8 out of 13 to have a sniff.

If we all start predicting and praying for it to happen then the enjoyment will turn into some form of disappointment if it doesn't happen.

I would recommend that we all take a step back, have hope, but just enjoy the ride. We're clear of league 2 for the moment which is an incredible achievement considering how the season has unfolded. We all know that. Lets all just stay clear of any feeling of disappointment, no matter how small, let Argyle surprise us if they can push themselves.

The way we keep winning makes games in hand must win games for other teams just to catch us. As Al Davis said "just win baby"

Peterborough, who have 3 games in hand over us, kick off against Blackpool shortly. Come on the Seasiders!!!!
