Barnsley’s season in League One in 2015-2016 is very similar to ours so far. They defied everyone in by going from bottom of League One in November to reaching the play-offs and winning promotion.
Barnsley sealed the final play-off spot on 74 points but had to rely on a better goal difference, the team in fifth place was 6 points ahead of them. With momentum behind them Barnsley beat Millwall in the Wembley final and were promoted to the Championship.
At game 15 they were 22nd in the league on 14 points, 13 points away from the play-offs, while at game 15 we were bottom of the league on 10 points and 13 points from 6th place.
At game 20 Barnsley were bottom of League One on 18 points, 15 points from play-offs. At game 20 we were also bottom on 17 points and 18 points away from the play-offs.
Things now started to change for both teams although at each 5 game comparison point we were always slightly worse off than Barnsley in terms of points total and the points gap to 6th place.
But at the 32 game point we nudged ahead of Barnsley’s record, they were in 10th place on 46 points and crucially 6 points away from the play-offs, at game 32 we were 5 points away from 6th place.
At game 35 Barnsley were in 6th place on goal difference and 3 points behind 5th place, at the same stage we were also in 6th place, 2 points ahead of 7th place and 4 points behind 5th place.
At game 37, where we currently are, Barnsley where still in 6th place but again only on goal difference and 4 points behind 5th.
We are in 6th place 1 point ahead of 7th and 1 point behind 5th place.
Barnsley needed Gillingham to drop like a stone for the last six or so games of the season to finish outside of play-offs. We’ve already seen Bradford and Charlton drop away and Scunthorpe are also struggling to stay in the top 6.
League One history repeating itself?
