1) With Matthews returning and Makasi injured there were 2 changes to the starting line-up. Letheren dropped to the bench where he replaced Cooper. Makasi's place was taken by Balham Green's hero Paul Paton with Sarcevic fit enough to take a place on the bench. Ainsworth also fit enough to return where he replaced Sangster. No sign of Taylor unfortunately.

2) Awful first half from Argyle. Reminiscent of a game in October or against Charlton. Toothless up front with no shots on target and very little possession. Lameiras unable to find a green shirt with a pass and everyone taking turns in giving the ball away with a loose pass. Northampton totally deserved their lead, Argyle having 3 or 4 warnings before they scored.

3) Grant and Carey unable to get into the game. Paton clearly not used to his role, and alongside an off form Threlkeld we were exposed down the right a lot. Matthews made a point blank save and but for Bradley and some wild finishing from Northampton we were lucky to go in only 1 down.

4) We needed to make changes at half-time, would today be the day that Adams recognised that plan A wasn't working and have something else up his sleeve? Half time news from the other grounds wasn't good either. It wasn't looking like it was going to be a great day.

5) Argyle started the second half far more brightly than they had been at any point in the first 45. Paton went down injured and was replaced by Sarcevic to a warm welcome from the Argyle fans. Argyle switched Grant and Lameiras. Matthews made another great save. Argyle reverted to type and the second duly followed.

6) Argyle started going long with no result. Matthews made yet another save. We were being over run. Chances came and went for Northampton. If you had no idea which team was facing the threat of relegation you would guess it was the team in green. The first Argyle shot on target came from Threlkeld in the 72nd minute.

7) Into the final 15 and Ainsworth replaced Fox. Carey now more central in a 4-4-2 with Ainsworth on the right. Last 10 and Fletcher on for the ineffective Grant. The game well and truly lost, although I must admit I lost confidence after conceding at the end of the first. We were playing so badly I couldn't see us ever scoring.

8 ) Vyner had one of his poorest games in a green shirt but was still one of the better Argyle players. He, Fox and Bradley the only ones to really come out of the game with any credit although we did look better with Sarcevic on the pitch. We couldn't even force the ball home with the goalie on the floor at the end of the game.

9) Adams has reverted to the autumn manager. We have no idea without Taylor and stubbornly keep going with hitting the ball hopefully forward with no-one who can hold the ball up. Without Taylor, Lameiras AND Carey are not the same players and we need more steel. He desperately needs to find an alternative formation and that isn't going to happen. The season ends unless Taylor becomes Lazarus.

Never mind, treat it like a bonus match.

Without Taylor the team is hopelessly toothless. Injury at this stage was shocking luck

We have to take the positives out of the season. This was a position l never thought we would be in. It’s a bonus.

We have areas of weakness. We are limited in our playing style because we don’t have enough options. We don’t beat teams by pace. We do it by skilful and technical players. When they have an off day though we become a slow paced team. However, we need more pace and energy.

Next season, if we remain in league one expectations will be high. The question is do we have significant levels of money to make that next step happen next season. Adams needs to bring in players he is confident to use. I find this season he sticks to the same core of players but the problem with this is when we lose key members the replacements don’t seem good enough.

The season isn’t over. We can still put a run together. We just have to do things in a non easy manner.

Dunno about others but when Taylor’s injury came through it felt like the season was over anyway and so not too disheartened. Someone’s run over several black cats at Argyle with the bad luck we’ve had this season. Makasi was the final straw. If Taylor’s back quickly we may have an outside chance but it feels like Shrews Charlton Rotherham and Scunny for me. Disappointed tonight.

Desperately need Taylor in for Tuesday at Rochdale. Cannot ask Grant to play his role any more. He's not up to it. I'm my opinion not good enough for a starting spot at all. Be better off trying Fletcher or trying a new system. If Taylor can play with cortisone injection maybe try that. Need him playing or play off chances quickly evaporating. .

Thanks for report as ever.

Just a point that needs sorting. Sarcevic can’t finish for toffees for us. He scored 33 in 178 for Fleetwood and Chester but only 4 in 38 for us and has missed several open goals.

Step it up Sarce!

Northampton wanted it more, they won the midfield, they won the 50 50s and they controlled the game.

If you want an idea how bad we were think back to watching the team in September etc. Only Remi Matthews can come out of this mess with any credit, he made five outstanding saves to make the defeat a little more respectable. It could have been 6-0.

The ball didn't stick up front but we knew that before the game, Grant tried his best but he was once again up against two big centre backs.

Grant had a chance in the first half but our best chances were late in the game when a shot from Lameiras was saved, Threlkeld had an angled shot saved and a Sarcevic close range shot was cleared off the line. That was about it.

Sarcevic didn't add much to the team when he replaced Paton.
Paton picked up an injury although it looked like Adams would sub him anyway, he's not forward thinking because his first instinct is to pass backwards.

Our two number 10's went missing - if Carey and Lameiras don't play the team doesn't play.

Too often a long ball caught us out. From one of our corners Northampton nearly scored. It was just a simply long clearance that created the chance and thankfully Matthews made one of his many saves.

The two Northampton goals came after a spell of pressure, you could see a goal was coming. The first we didn't clear the ball after a Matthews save and the second was a cross into our area.

So onto Matthews - his kicking is still suspect and he still causes chaos when he leaves his area but today he stood between Northampton and a drubbing. He made several one on one saves to keep the score respectful.

Northampton are another team who targeted Sawyer on the left although he had a better second half.

We knew Taylor's absence would affect us but not as much as the last two games. Without Taylor Lameiras and Carey are not the same players and we are not the same team.

Such a shame our away form is deserting us at a critical time.

Man of the Match - Matthews.

Matthews 9, Threlkeld 6, Vyner 7, Bradley 6, Sawyer 5, Fox 6, Ness 6, Paton 4, Carey 5, Lameiras 5, Grant 6. Subs Sarcevic 5, Ainsworth 5, Fletcher n/a.

The purple patch is well and truly over, our lucky streak has ended and normal service has resumed without Taylor.
Far from winning the 4 remaining games I can see us losing the lot without Taylor

Toothless and no plan A let alone plan B

Not much of a supporter if you think that ,put your money on Argyle losing the next four,if your so confident.

Grant was a disgrace. You'd think he'd have some professional pride?

Carey and Lameiras in particular utterly useless. And a tired old midfield often not even close enough to be 2nd best.

Worse still was Adams with no plan B whatsoever.

Thank heavens for Matthews without whom it could have been 6.

Finally a huge thumbs down to Brentwallet for letting us get to this stage without 11 decent players.

Well we still have a chance. We have to play Scunny and have a game in hand on them so that’s a must win. Mind you I think most of them are must wins now. Although it’s more difficult without Taylor, he did “play” against Charlton and got not very far indeed. So there is still hope.
