Plymouth
I've been looking on and off for months now for proof that we once had a second team in Plymouth. My understanding was we had Argyle but also Plymouth City, I think at either pennycomequick or another location. Could someone please give me a definitive answer?

There was a Plymouth City many, many years ago.

I thought they played at Pennycross.

Andy, the name rings a distant bell for me as well !!

IF it was Pennycross then it would have to be either

The Civil Service Sports Ground at Beacon Down [opposite Pennycross Primary School in Ham Drive

AND next to the OLD Plymouth Albion Rugby ground in Beacon Park Road]

OR

Pennycross Stadium, the venue for speedway and stock cars ?

As a lad growing up there, my money would be on the former ?

Unless someone can tell me otherwise ?

Keep the Faith :scarf:

I thought it was the Speedway Stadium Paul.

I used to go there regularly for the speedway (Ivan Mauger has just passed away - he was a "hero" in the old days) and I sort of recollect seeing adverts placed around the stadium advertising the City games.

Kiwi! Born in Christchurch but lived his later years on the Gold Coast.

I remember him riding for Exeter Falcons...don't think he rode for Poole.

If you dig a few decades back, roughly around the turn of the century, there was another team with the interesting name of Green Waves. They entered the FA Cup a few times and then seemed to disappear.

Edit: once again, GOS comes through like a good'un. It seems that before the Great War there were several clubs in Plymouth vying to emerge as the strongest. (The History of Argyle chapter 6 and following).

Christ we're lucky to have that.

Yes, I remember watching Plymouth City play at least once and Duncan Neale playing for them. I seem to recall them wearing an all-Orange kit. There was talk of them becoming serious rivals to Argyle but the dream soon faded and died.

Plymouth City used to play at Pennycross Stadium which was a dog track also. I was a ball boy for them in the sixties, Johnny Waite who owned the Pussycat Club was the owner and we used to get half a crown per game. They used to play the likes of Torquay United reserves and I think they were in the Western League. After he finished at Argyle Duncan Neale played for them.

I played against Green Waves for Oreston Rovers in the Eighties another great local team with history, we played in the Plymouth and District League and also had another side in the Plymouth Combination League Sadly both clubs are no more!

Thanks people. I'm glad that's sorted. So another question. If Plymouth parkway continue to rise the leagues does anyone believe they could've the new second team?
