1) Sarcevic and Josh Grant injured so in came Mayor and Conor Grant with Bakinson dropping to the defensive midfield role. Edward's dropped to the bench and Moore moving out wide which allowed Jephcott and Hardie to start. Also on the bench were McFadzean and Taylor for the first time for ages.

2) Poor first 45 from Argyle with Cooper especially wasteful with his final delivery and failing to pick up his man in defence. Conor Grant and Wootton were also wasteful but it was Grant who supplied the cross for the Argyle opener, Bakinson finishing off at the back post.

3) Jephcott and Hardie seemed to be finding an understanding between them and with Mayor provided most of the positive opportunities. It was the dodgy defence again that caused concern. A couple of times the ball ran across the face of the Argyle goal but luck or a defender managed to get in the way.

4) Argyle seemed to be missing the strong runs of Sarcevic and Conor Grant couldn't quite get the pass through to Moore or the forwards. Mayor on the other side carried the ball well and formed good partnerships with Sawyer and Cooper.

5) Newport started the second half well and Argyle rarely threatened for the first 15 of the second half. Newport had the bulk of possession and forced a couple of opportunities. Lowe brought on Edwards for Conor Grant.

6) Edwards seemed to make a difference making a better link going forward. With 15 to go the game started to open up Jephcott and Edwards both had long shots, one saved, one wide. At the other end Edwards gave away a silly foul near the edge of the penalty area.

7) Mayor put in Cooper who bottled the challenge. The Argyle crowd started looking nervously at watches. Newport players started hitting the floor and winning free-kicks all over the park. Hardie was booked for a professional foul.

8 ) With just over 5 to go Taylor came on for Jephcott. Sawyer got a straight red for a foul on the edge of the box, it looked harsh from the Demport. It was all Newport now, Palmer made a good save and Newport put a good chance wide. Randell came on for Hardie.

9) Another ugly game for Argyle who were obviously affected by the loss of Sarcevic and Josh Grant. It was a fairly even game and Newport will probably feel aggrieved. If he hadn't been sent off, Sawyer would have been my motm.

Sarcevic and Grant aren't too bad apparently, but as with Danny Mayor in the previous game, RL didn't want to risk them.

We need Sarcevic fit and firing so that's good news.

We could do a lot worse than have a look at their Skipper if we get promoted.
Grant and Haride are getting fitter and sharper every time they play.
The strength of our bench considering the player that were unavailable just goes to show that we have a decent competative squad, hopefully all will be fit for the run in.

We do seem to have got a lot of injuries this season...and agree about Sarce who has been very impressive

We were far too sloppy today with our passing but we battled well and just snuck over the line.

Canavan mom for me.

Thought me missed Sarcevic massively today, we had absolutely no drive from midfield at all. Bakinson does alright but isn’t the combative midfielder like Sarce.

And can some one please explain the point of Conor Grant? He offers the square root of zero to the team, his only asset is a decent left leg but from a central position it’s redundant.

Palmer had a great game. Commanded his box very well. When there were crosses to be claimed he was there.

The other person l thought had a very good game was Moore. A much better outlet with him at RWB because he gets Argyle up the pitch because of his decent dribbling. His work rate, which includes his tracking back, just gives us a better balance on the right hand side.

First half l really enjoyed the way we played. Some decent passing. Some good interchange of play from side to side.

Second half we were sloppy. Gave the ball away cheaply. Kept persisting with longer balls which against their centre halves were too easy at times. I thought Hardie runs the channels well. I think Jephcott did fine but l find with him he gets physically out muscled so something he will need to work on as he doesn't have the pace like Hardie to run the channels.

Either we need a midfielder comfortable on the ball to link up the forwards better or we need a physical, but mobile, unit upfront to hold onto the ball better.

After the disappointment of conceding such a late goal on Tuesday night it was great we hung on in the end. Good character like other people have already mentioned.

This league is such a dogfight. I guess many of these type matches to come.

Yes, it’s all pretty morbid around here (as usual). That’s four subpar performances now yet it’s yielded 10 points from 12.

P.s - Exeter, who the f**k is laughing now?

ARgYLE WON!

Phew! That was close.

For all our attractive attacking style of football this season this win was built on a solid defensive display and resolute character (blood and snotters) from the players, none more so than Gary Sawyer who was up against a difficult player in Jordan Green (ironically) and even though he was red carded in the 85th minute Sawyer's defensive display and that of his team mates was enough to win the three points.
The attacking players have received all the plaudits this season so it's only fair that the defensive unit get the credit for this win.

In truth both defences came out on top, Luke Jephcott and Ryan Hardie were starved of any decent service and we appeared to settle for the early goal from Ty Bakinson.

Credit to Newport, they are another visiting team like Crawley who had a real go at us and maybe deserved something from the game but in the grand scheme of things promotion is won on winning games just like this.

Josh Grant and Antoni Sarcevic were missing from the squad, in came Conor Grant and Danny Mayor and Hardie and Jephcott formed a partnership up front.

We had the perfect start to the game when Mayor took a short corner to Assist who fired a great cross to the far post and there was Bakinson to arrive late and tap in. 1-0 so early and a goal straight from the training ground.

Newport recovered from this early disaster and came at us, especially down our left side with Green. Sawyer initially struggled to cope with him and could have done with some assistance from Assist.
Palmer saved a shot from Labadie and from Jamille Matt as Newport won a string of corners.

Mayor started to have an influence on the game, he combined well with Assist on the left and carved out a chance for Hardie which was saved.
Conor Grant had a low shot well saved after more good work from Mayor to set him up. Wootton had a far post chance from a corner but the ball wouldn't drop quick enough to enable him to get a shot on target.

Green was still causing problems for the Greens and we did well to go in at half-time still in the lead.

The second half started with Newport again putting us under pressure, we were content to soak up their attacks and play on the counter attack.
Mayor's influence on the game was not as pronounced as the first half which meant we had trouble keeping hold of the ball, sloppy passes went astray, simple passes missed their intended target and we looked weak in midfield.
This was remedied with Conor Grant getting subbed and Edwards coming on.

Newport, again like Crawley, played three forwards right up against our defence, is this the opposition blueprint on how to play against us?

We couldn't find that elusive second goal and couldn't keep hold of the ball but whatever Newport could throw at us Sawyer, Canavan and Wootton held strong backed up by Palmer who came for crosses and corners, however the pressure from Newport was building and building.

Taylor replaced the tiring Jephcott, this was quickly followed by Sawyer receiving a red card for a lunge on Green. I've seen worse tackles that only get a yellow card.
Bakinson slotted into defence and Randell came on in midfield with Hardie sacrificed.

Newport laid siege on our goal and we got lucky when a long range shot cannoned off the woodwork. Long throws were launched in, long balls were launched in but still Canavan and his mates held firm.

The biggest cheer of the day was the final whistle. We dodged a bullet with this one.

We could and should have scored more goals to have put this game to bed but once again credit to the opposition who at times were the better attacking team.

Sawyer was immense, ok he got a red card and now a 3 game ban but his defensive performance and the way he handled Green was superb.
Canavan and Wootton blocked, headed and tackle well helped by Bakinson screening them in midfield.
Mayor ran the game in the first half but tired and maybe should have been subbed late in the game.
Moore showed once again he's our best RWB.
Palmer was back to his best after his Crawley jitters, his handling was fantastic and really helped to relieve the pressure by collecting crosses into the box.

Conor Grant was given a chance to show what he can do but apart from a good shot on goal the game passed him by, he was lethargic and wasted possession, we really missed the drive Sarcevic brings to the team.
Another assist for Assist, he has to play in the team purely for his assists and set-piece delivery but his defensive side of the game needs to improve.

Jephcott and Hardie did ok and there are signs that a partnership could happen, there isn't much talk in modern football of striker partnerships with most teams opting to play with just one striker. Today Jephcott and Hardie didn't get the service they needed.

I don't think ARgYLE WON gets enough credit for his tactical skills, he comes across in the media as a bit of a joker but the goal today was a well worked training ground routine. He could have subbed Grant at half-time which would have destroyed the player but Lowe gave him a chance to improve in the second half, a chance he didn't take so it was good man-manangement.

A battling win built on a strong defensive performance.

Man of the Match - Sawyer.

Palmer 7, Wootton 7, Canavan 7, Sawyer 8, Bakinson 7, Moore 7, Conor Grant 5, Mayor 6, Assist 7, Jephcott 6, Hardie 6. Subs - Edwards 6, Taylor n/a, Randell n/a.
