Are people finally going to realise they’re a good thing? Particularly after the goal we scored today? Every time we take one, there’s a loud groan around Home Park, to be fair, that’s probably the case at most grounds, but it doesn’t make sense.

Unless you’re side who specialise in and pin your hopes on set pieces, statistically only a tiny, tiny number of goals are scored from ‘swinging it in’. Even Peter Crouch, your classic big man, said in his podcast that more sides should be taking short corners. If you’re a good footballing side, like we are, then you’re far more likely to create something by playing it short. Watch our goal today, our goal at Forest Green, among others, I’d much prefer seeing them to seeing a ball being swung in and either not making the first man or the ref just blowing for a foul every time.

Especially with the players we have in the box (other than canavan). When you have players like mayor who make defenfers back off like he does theres always a chance to drive into their box and create something

Agreed. Short corners are the way forward for a technically good side like ours. We're not built to win much in the air.

Can't remember too many goals from corners sent straight into the box. however. a few have been scored when playing short.

Agreed. Defenders are well set and drilled for a 'normal' corner. When you take it short and change the angle of delivery it unsettles them.

Soccernomics makes the point that goals from corners are so rare compared with goals from outfield play in the final quarter, that short corners are the only rational thing to do. They also make the point, which I agree with, that goals from corners are so memorable that they stick in the mind longer than outfield goals, and so seem more numerous. I can remember Mourinho saying during his first year over here that he couldn’t understand the British obsession over corners, which you don’t find elsewhere in Europe.

Another goal created/scored from a short corner today, despite the collective groan whenever we take one. When you have good technical players like we do you’re far more likely to create a chance by playing it short than by ‘whipping’ it in.

I find Crouch’s teenie-bopper radio show tough listening, but surely mixing it up a-bit is the best recipe isn’t it?

And our only goal at Wembley wasn’t direct from a corner was it?

Though it might solve the early-leaving issue, were there a guarantee please of corners to groan at.

We can't have scored much more than 4 goals this season from short corners.

Sonny Bradley scored plenty from set pieces, Graham Coughlan was our top scorer one season.

Scoring headed or scrappy goals from corners isn't that rare at all.

Corners that don't beat the first man...that's more annoying

Absolutely, now that's a huge waste of a decent opportunity and fans have a right to have a moan.

There's still a time and a place for a traditional corner but that's when you have a dominant header of the ball in your team such as Coughlin or Bradley. We don't have one right now so we should play to our strengths and mainly use short corners.

Corners that go over everybody's head and out of play near the opposite corner flag are even more annoying to me. It happened again last night and I see it regularly on TV. I understand it happening from a winger running at full pelt but surely a pro. should be able to just get it in the box from a dead ball kick.
