I was in the Barn Park end that day. That Staniforth shot! I was in the air celebrating for what seemed like an age (almost hung in the ait like Stevie Cooper used to do) Not bad for an overweight 14 year old
It sure was. I was in my late 20s and living in Truro at the time. A car load of us travelled to Villa Park. It was almost surreal arriving at what then was a regular semi final ground and sitting in the stadium trying to take in the fact that my little team was in touching distance of being the first 3rd tier team to reach the FA Cup Final, a national institution.
I was in the Lyndhurst - still to this day cannot fathom how Gordon Staniforth's shot didn't somehow crawl over the line. It was a good match. 38000+? I still remember a very fat Robert Maxwell - Derby's then owner, but paid for with stolen Daily Mirror pension funds! - coming on to the pitch at the end of the game.
