Best disallowed goal

At the cricket today Ollie Pope took a great catch but there was no wicket due to it being a no ball. The Test Match Special team were talking about how it was such a shame that although it would have been shown on the highlights tonight, it would probably been soon forgotten and never shown again. It got me thinking..... does anyone remember Argyle’s best disallowed goals?

I can remember we played Bournemouth once, Billy Rafferty beat about 6 players and banged it in only for a referee called Turvey to disallow it. He saw Mariner in the corner (BPE by the Far Post) doing his laces up.

We went mad that day, and it wasn't long after that the idiot known as 'Topsy' was sacked.

That's the one that immediately sprang to my mind. It was actually against Port Vale and the last Home match of the 74/75 season. Rafferty ran with the ball from his own half beating about 6 players as you say and smashed the ball into the roof of the net down at the Barn Park end. We were all astounded when Turvey disallowed it for an offside. He also sent off Colin Randell that day just prior to John Delve equalising for Argyle to give us a 1-1 draw. It was one of the most inept displays of referring I have seen at Home Park and believe me I have seen a few. Alan 'Topsy' Turvey was subsequently sacked by the League.
If we had won that day we would probably be promoted as Champions as opposed to runners up to Blackburn.

I remember that 'goal' too, although I also thought it was against Port Vale.

However, not long afterwards, Rafferty scored a very similar effort against, I think, Sunderland. This time it was allowed.
Oh Billy, Billy....

Going back many years I remember Johnny Williams smashing one of his long shots into the net but was ruled out because someone was offside. I think this was against West Ham in the FA cup and we ran out 3-0 winners and I'm sure Williams scored one that counted. It wouldn't surprise me if none of that happened and I dreamt it

Rafferty's screamer against Port Vale was the one that leapt to my mind too.

I seem to remember the referee needing an escort off the field that day.

How the memory plays games.

The player involved was one of my all time favourites Stevie Cooper - but the opponent isn't coming to me. It was a cross from the right (possibly K Hodges), Cooper was sadly offside (no defender of GK knew it at the time) - he aimed an outrageous right footed volley from about 8 yards out, the keeper hedged his bets and moved to his right ready to make himself as big as possible, however, Cooper missed it completely, the ball hit his standing foot and rolled into the other corner - it was beautiful for all the wrong reasons.

Oh Billy, Billy....

I think it was last game of season immediately after the Col. U promotion night. And the Sunderland game was first home game back in old Divsion 2. 25000 there. What an atmosphere.

That's exactly the one that immediately sprang to my mind too when I saw the thread subject! It would have been the goal of that or almost any other season, and it was infuriating to see it disallowed, seemingly for nothing.
