Watching MOTD on Saturday, I heard Jonathan Pierce commentating on the Arsenal match and waxing lyrical about their new signing, Gabriel. I almost spilt my coffee when JP came out with, 'At £23 million, he's a snip!' :funny:

For all those fans of 'proper' clubs like ours (and not those based in the realm of Narnia) it made me wonder, relatively speaking, what type of signing in the past that we paid a transfer fee for could be described as having been 'a snip'?

I'll start the ball rolling with Sir Thomas of Tynan - £50,000, if I recall correctly. :scarf:

I feel as if I should edit the thread title to stop the mental image I had when I read it

I'll leave it a while longer

But yes it's monopoly money that bears no resemblance to reality, especially jarring when you hear kids talk about 'only £40m!'... Problem is, it is still real money.

Whatever we paid for Akos Buzsaky could have been considered "a snip" I reckon! I don't remember ever seeing a figure however?

Also, Carey was a freebie. Don't get any better than that IMO.

Apologies for taking a liberty with the original post but buying Peter Swan for £300,000 brought a level of pain akin to having 'the snip'.

David Norris for £20k - Friio and Romain on a free - there are bargains in this world if you are in the right place at the right time.

On the downside £15k for Yannick Bolasie 4 years before we went for £25 million must be the one that is the clubs biggest regret.

I can remember Barrie Jones signing I think in the sixties for I believe £60000/70000 and on rough calculations that would be around £2million in today’s money

You were close but checking with the bible (GOS) it was 45,000 pounds a British record for a winger

Jones began his career with his hometown club, Swansea Town. A highly skilled winger, he was a Welsh under-23 international and made his full international debut in October 1962, the first of fifteen caps. After six years with Swansea he was brought to Home Park by Malcolm Allison, for a then club-record £45,000, which was at the time also a British record fee for a winger.

A bit of inflation over the years there, I am afraid. The fee was only £45,000 which was in 1964 the record payment for Argyle
