Argyle beat the Brewers
Plymouth Argyle were victorious against Burton Albion this afternoon in a match which saw the Greens largely comfortable, as they kept up their record of only one loss since January in the league at home.
After the first five minutes where Argyle looked to settle into the game as Burton came out the blocks quickly, the home side were eventually able to start dictating the tempo of the game
This was mostly due to the midfield unit of Mayor, Grant and debutant Tyrese Fornah who was making his first start in the league since joining on loan from Nottingham Forest last week.
Fornah controlled the pace of the game brilliantly in front of the three centre backs, which freed up Mayor and Grant to influence attacking situations.
Grant in particular used this opportunity to link up with the returning Luke Jephcott on 24 minutes.
After some good combination play between Grant and Jephcott in which they exchanged a give and go, the Welshman was able to fire through the legs of Brewers stopper Ben Garrett as he entered the box.
Garrett may feel he could've done better with the strike, but that would bring no complaints from Jephcott, who scored his second goal in just two league games this season.
Argyle continued to control much of the game going into halftime without making too many clear cut chances; as Michael Cooper went into halftime virtually untested in the Pilgrims' goal.
The second half was very much a reverse of the first 45 as Argyle were the ones to came out firing this time.
In the first minute of the second half the home side found themselves two up, when a good wrapped pass from Danny Mayor found George Cooper after some good hold up play from Frank Nouble, and Cooper was able to fire across the box to Byron Moore at the back post who lashed in from one yard out.
From this point onwards though, Burton began to send Argyle deeper, and could've pulled one back soon after as front man
Indiana Vassilev fired wide in a one on one with Michael Cooper.
Burton had much of the possession for the rest of the afternoon, but were unable to really create anything of note against Argyle's new look three man defence of Canavan, Aimson and Watts.
Midfielder Ben Reeves came on fifteen minutes to help get Argyle on the ball a bit more in the closing stages, and put in another great performance as he was able to find pockets of space which relieved pressure.
This was a performance where the Greens rarely got out of second gear, but they were too strong for a side currently second from bottom in the early stages of the season.
A much needed win for Argyle in all competitions then, and one that has come at just the right time ahead of a busy October schedule.
