Wing Backs and Final Third composure

So the two real issues l feel that will determine RL Legacy as Argyle manager.

The Wing Back system feels like are playing a system where we are trying to fudge it by playing people who aren’t equipped to do both jobs, attacking and defending, well. It’s a specialised position. Yet after 14 months of this 3-5-2 system it feels we don’t play to the systems strengths. Moore is the closest thing to a wing back as he has the energy to get up and down the pitch but the problem is the final pass or decision making.

Which brings me onto point two. The composure in the final third. Its not just one player to single out but many of them. It’s like we become panic stricken and pass the wrong pass or don’t execute the pass / cross very well. It is happening in so many games that it’s now a concern that for an attacking team (who gives the opposition chances) that we are making bad decisions on a consistent basis. That game today in the second half against a poor side was pretty atrocious. Times the players under no pressure lost the ball. It was careless.

George Cooper isn’t really a wing back. Byron Moore isn’t hitting the heights he did last season. Joe Edwards is ok.

There lies our main problem in my opinion.

Our system relies heavily on us having quality wing backs, we don’t really have any.

If we dont have wing backs then we have to make a straight choice between George Cooper and Danny Mayor, our two best players.

Fadz just got signed by Sunderland, so he finally got the step up held out for.

Moore once back in form should be suitable at RWB. But just seems to have had a pretty woeful start to the season.

Edwards seems a lower league Milner, can fill in but rarely a strong or threatening link.

Super Coops might still work at LWB if Watts can continue playing that well.

So why were we so good in the first half.

Wigan allowed us to be good.

I think that’s right.
Obviously our players aren’t at their absolute best all the time, but we also need to remember how good defenders are at getting into the right positions and making blocks, and how good managers are in tactical terms; so it’s not just about “getting a decent cross in”, because the defenders are working to stop this and can often do so, which probably explains why Wigan snuffed out our threat in the second half, once they realised what was needed.
I agree with giving Ryan Law a start in George Cooper’s absence, and I think Law can also play on the right?

There is no such thing as a perfect player in the lower leagues, and that's particularly true of wingbacks. You need to be quick, have a great engine, ideally skillful enough to get past people and have a good cross and shot on you, while also having sufficient defensive nous to not only be in the right position to make a tackle but then actually make the tackle.

Not asking much of a League One player is it?

RL isn't going to change his system, so unless any of you have won the lottery recently and can go out and buy the perfect wingback (even though such a thing almost certainly doesn't exist for a club like ours) then you should probably give the guys a break.

The biggest failing is when Mayor or A N other breaks into the box - it’s crying out for the ball to be pulled back to someone to shoot but all too often there’s a shot from an impossible angle or a too powerful cross missing everyone. We need a system where, if a player is in that position, they don’t even need to look up. They pull the ball back and there’s an Argyle player there.

Corners is another area to work on when Cooper isn’t available. Mayors were terrible.

I’d also like to see some long range efforts from people like Camara who has a terrific shot on him.

We need to stop overplaying it in the box !

It’s all about how the opposition stop us from getting our wingbacks us the pitch.

Sometimes it’s indirectly by stopping our holding midfielder from playing the ball out.

If that halts us we struggle to get into midfield and beyond. Very quickly our wingbacks turn into fullbacks and a 5 man defence. The holding midfield sits deep defending and we get no foothold in the middle of the park completely cut off from our front 2.

When we are allowed to play high up the pitch we can give anyone a good run for there money but when teams stop us playing our system we fall flat and struggle massively.

We need to have a plan B to teams going to there plan B. Straight for straight swaps doesn’t do that. We need a change of system and we’re crying out for it second half’s once the opposition has worked us.

Simple formation changes, not a massive overhaul of the system.

Starting with 4 at the back.

I just feel it is the speed of the transition from defence to attack which is the problem. If it all happened swifter, the opposition would not be all behind the ball 25 yards in front of the goal they are defending. If there was more space in the attacking area I am sure Argyle have the players to score, rather than having their attempts being blocked by bodies..

You can continually push your agenda for four at the back, Tugs, but as long as Ryan Lowe is in charge we will be playing with three at the back.

You may not like it but you may as well get used to it, he ain't gonna change.
