Oxford Matchday Moments ... club You Tube. (beware of loud music).

Plymouth is placed into Covid tier 3 so no fans will be allowed into Home Park for Saturday's game against Gillingham. Club statement.

In the top four leagues only two other teams have conceded more goals this season than Argyle - Swindon Town and Burton Albion in League One.

Oxford manager Karl Robinson talks about a quick change of tactics early in the game and the Home Park floodlights ... Oxford club website.
We noticed the lights are low on one side and the keepers said about it so I sprinted in before the game and asked if anyone had a long throw and we used that from that side of the pitch. It was a last minute thing but we had three or four of those, knowing we would get the ball in the box.

Watching those highlights it’s clear from the second goal that Byron Moore has lost his running speed, something which was his main asset last season. He looks really fatigued despite having played few minutes this season.

At the game last night the main thing I noticed in the build up to that goal was Mayor stepping sideways to allow their player to start his forwards run and I was livid about that. It looked odd at the time - he should have put a challenge in - but I think he thought the player was going to pass the ball and moved to cut off the non-existent pass.

Those first half v second half stats look pretty telling.

It is bizarre. First 30 mins of every match we look like we are winning the league. Second 30 we go completely off the boil and don't do any of the things we were doing in the first 30. Last 30 Lowe brings on loads of subs who invariably contribute very little.

Almost always the lead and dominance of the first 30 mins is usually peed away along with the result.

How can the same thing keep happening game after game? You can almost set your watch by it.

Because we can't defend. You can't hope to just outscore your opposition every time if you keep conceding soft goals.

We seem able to defend perfectly fine for the first 30 mins. We are like an olympic sprinter who flies out and is yards ahead after 20 metres.

Then psychologically something happens.

Hardie stops getting the ball in dangerous areas and becomes a passenger. Because of that Jephcott becomes a passenger, two strikers and no service. Midfield get overran. We defend deeper and deeper. Nervous tension sets in. Any kind of elevated punt into our box seems to scare the life out of everybody involved. Suddenly you are thinking we have got 45-60 mins of this and only a one goal lead.

You can feel the equaliser coming and an inevitable winner from the opposition, when five minutes before we had been passing them off the pitch and creating chances. The whole gameplan seems to go straight out the window on the half hour mark.

How does this happen every single game?

We should probably look at the opposition and not ourselves for the root of the answer.
What a strange thing to say! We are the common denominator in all games ,the opposition are glad to accept our gifts. Our play is so predictable that's why this happens every single game.

But that doesn’t make sense surely? If we were that predictable we wouldnt be so good in the first half of games, other teams would know how to play against us from the start.

Opposition manager sees that we are actually sticking to our plan A and sets up second half to overcome it

Yes. The only conclusion would seem to be that opposing coaching teams figure out how to counteract us during the first half, then make changes at half-time which catch us by surprise; our coaches then either do not have time to adjust to the opposition’s new strategy, or do not know how to.
Is this not the logical explanation for the staggering difference in our 1st and 2nd half performances?

Noticeable to me that in every post-match, RL refers to the “game-plan” and how well or not the players stuck to it; but if the game-plan needs to change during a match because the opposition has counteracted it, then clearly RL (or somebody on our coaching staff!) needs to be able to successfully do this.

I did find it quite perplexing why a New Goalkeeping coach was employed when the vastly experienced Luke Mcormick was already around.
Having playing goal keeping coach who knows the club inside out surely would have made economical and sporting sense.
