Seven top flight opponents - ultimately seven defeats - five first tie defeats and two lost replays - the seasons involved cover the the 1930s through to the 2000s.

The teams in alphabetical order

Arsenal
Everton
Leeds
Portsmouth
Tottenham Hotspur
Watford
Wolves

Divide these teams in to three groups of 2, 3 and 4 - two of the teams appear in more than one of the groups.

Any thoughts?

The OP stated the seasons run from the 30s, so, you may need to go back further.

So, we lost to Watford in semis in 84, therefore the Everton reference must be a different season. Can't help you with Wolves as GoS tells me we played them in 50/51 & 51/52 losing after replay in 50/51, neither saw Wolves in the final.

Three groups are required, so maybe the league championship is involved
as well ? And could it be the status of the team when we played them
(reigning champions or cup holders) rather that what they did later ?

Spurs won the double in 1961, so could appear in two groups.
Watford, of course, have never won the league, but were runners-up
the year before our semi-final.

Reigning Cup holders
Wolves were FA Cup holders when they came to Home Park in Jan 1950.
Leeds winners in 1972.

Cup winners in season they played Argyle
Spurs won the Cup in 1961 after playing Argyle.
Portsmouth 2008

Cup finalists in season playing Argyle
Watford 1984. Arsenal 1932. Leeds 1973. Everton 1989.

Not sure this is right as SG says Spurs should appear twice.....hopefully this post will turn into an assist for someone.

All sorted now thanks to Vampires11 - Spurs came to Argyle as Cup Holders, Cheshire Green, and went on to retain the Cup against Burnley in 1962. I had to double check all the dates on this one - it's easy to get the years and the seasons mixed up!
