The spare man fallacy

It's often been suggested on this board, and the ifollow commentator
has recently taken up the theme too, that Mayor being double or triple
marked leaves us with a spare man somewhere.
Do we assume that the opposition haven't thought of that ?
It seems to be that the thinking behind the extra marking is to
hem Mayor in so that he is unable to access the supposed spare man.
This was very evident last night, as Mayor often ended up going nowhere,
or if he did manage to unload, the receiver generally found himself in a
tight spot.
I would be interested to see us start Mayor-less for 2 or 3 games, to see what
we can do without him. It might be good practice for next season.

Twice DM has been missing :- away to Rochdale lost 4 - 0
away to Bristol Rovers lost 3 - 0

Not sure the losses are down to the absence of DM but certainly the lack of attacking threat can be.
