Speaking to a colleague last week about the lack of interest in Argyle by Plymouthians he said that the last time he went the crowd used to sing the following when the police had to wade in to any trouble:

Who's that copper with the helmet on
Dixon, Dixon,
Who's that copper with the helmet on
Dixon of Dock Green
On the beat all day
On the wife all night
Who's that copper with the helmet on
Dixon of Dock Green

The Dixon of Dock Green series ran from 1955 to 1976 but I'd have thought my colleague would have been going in the late 60s/early 70s. Anyone else remember singing this?

I cannot tell a lie .... . Good laugh though.

I think so much atmosphere has gone from the ground because the singing crowd is now split between the Lyndhurst corner and the Devonport.

and the theme from Laurel & Hardy

I'd forgotten that one so thanks for reminding me and bringing half a smile to my face (memories are about all we've got at the moment)

Yes also "Harry Roberts is our friend, He kills coppers"

That news story was used in a bloody good book which was turned into a drama. Forgotten the name - The long game?

It was called "He Kills Coppers" by Jake Arnott. In the book the name was changed from Harry Roberts to Billy Porter, though.

"The Long Firm" was Arnott's first book... also a bloody good read.

Incidentally, there is a vague local connection as well - Jake Arnott's parents live in North Cornwall these days.

Second line should read "If I had the arse of a crow" see it rhymes
