My guess:

So Riddler is buying the club for a quid very soon.
Today's announcement is part of his strategy and he realises the current crowd are totally discredited.
The Riddler the man on a white charger saves us from extinction and we worship him as our saviour.

hmmm - the company that owns the club is not officially in administration, they can't all just resign en masse.
