Terrible news to hear of the passing of an Argyle Legend. A main stay of Dave Smiths promotion team. He was some player, incredibly skillful, great passer and really got stuck in. RIP legend.

Flippin heck.
How old was he ? He can't be that old.
Coughlan was one of the main characters in Dave Smith's classic team of the 1980s. One of the most exciting teams I have watched.

I think I am right in saying that Coughlan's team achieved Argyle's highest league placing ever (around 6th or 7th in what is now the Championship). I don't know if that is correct or not- but he was part of a great team.

RIP Russell. Condolences to his family. He was a tenacious midfielder who gave his all to the team. Tragic.

Gutted to hear this. A lot of young fans won't remember him but he was ace.

56 is too young.

RIP Russ.

I echo your sentiments - far too soon. A really outstanding player and a brilliant bloke too. On your other point - highest finishes. The Smith side was superb but we have had two fourth places in the second tier (1931-32 and 1952-53) and two fifth places (1936-37 and 1961-62). But as Frank says in his post, Russell would have been in any Argyle side in any era.
