Bike Rides with my mates. Leave mount gould go over Laira Bridge - down past Chelson Meadow through Saltram. Down to Marsh Mills up to Plym Bridge then on to the Goodameavy Tunnel. Amazing dark tunnel that curves so at half way its pitch black! We used to get off in the middle and explore the workers tunnels then get spooked and run out. Back on the bikes up to Bickleigh. At the bottom of the steep footpath is a bend in the river where we forded across and built a ropeswing over the deep corner bit. Then we would make a fire - the ranger always came and because we had a circle of stones surrounding the fire he was quite happy and we got to know him - nice bloke. I remember one scorching day I went on the swing and let go over the water to jump in. I have never felt water so cold!!!! It took my breath away - I struggled to swim the 20 yards to shore.
Some weekends when we did it there was around 15 of us all on bikes. It really was boys heaven! We had some laughs there!!
I don't think kids today do that sort of thing do they? mass gangs on bikes going camping in the wilds? shame....
I doubt I could ride a bike that far these days either. Must be around 25 miles round trip. Some of the bikes were bmx with no gears too! I had a Grifter so I was lucky - though it was soooo heavy.
