TAMAR BRIDGE – ESSENTIAL WORKS - EXPANSION JOINT REPLACEMENT
START DATE: Friday 3 July 2015
DURATION: Weekend working only, on three consecutive weekends ending 20 July 2015
As part of our planned maintenance programme we need to replace the worn out expansion joints on the main deck of the bridge commencing on Friday 3 July 2015. This work is essential – the joints are critical elements of the bridge structure that allow the structure to accommodate the effects of temperature changes and loading, and are situated at each end of the bridge’s main span i.e. near each of the bridge towers. The existing joints were installed 15 years ago as part of the Strengthening and Widening project undertaken between 1999 and 2001, and they have now, as predicted, reached the ends of their serviceable lives. The works will be carried out over two weekends with a third weekend planned as contingency only. Some overnight works will be required but this will be kept to a minimum where possible.
This engineering work will be carried out over the following weekends:
8pm Friday 3 July – 6am Monday 6 July – Saltash main tower expansion joint
8pm Friday 10 July – 6am Monday 13 July – Plymouth main tower expansion joint
8pm Friday 17 July – 6am Monday 20 July – contingency to allow for poor weather/delays
Due to the nature of the works, the layout of the bridge structure and traffic management constraints it will be necessary to impose a main deck closure on the bridge each weekend. The restrictions during these main deck closures will be as follows:
1. The south cantilever foot/cycle path of the bridge will be closed to ALL pedestrians, mobility scooters and cyclists for the duration of the works and opened to vehicular traffic to travel in a west bound direction into Cornwall.
2. The north cantilever lane of the bridge will remain open for the duration of the works to enable vehicles to travel in an east bound direction towards Plymouth. However, during the works the east bound traffic coming from the Saltash Tunnel will be diverted onto the north cantilever lane. The A38 traffic will have priority and local Saltash traffic will be required to give way at the bottom of the Saltash slip road.
3. The main deck of the bridge will be fully closed for the duration of the works. Emergency access arrangements will be in place and utilised if necessary.
Between each of these weekend periods the traffic arrangements will be as normal.
A free shuttle bus service between the Tamar Bridge car park and Fore Street in Saltash will operate continuously throughout the day and night for the duration of each of these weekend periods. Collection and drop off points will be clearly signposted at each location. The service will cater for all pedestrians, mobility scooters and cyclists. For safety reasons it is essential that all pedestrians, mobility scooters and cyclists use the shuttle bus service provided and do not attempt to use the south cantilever lane or mix with vehicular traffic. We will endeavour to keep waiting times to a minimum and would appreciate cooperation and patience during busy periods.
Free light recovery and heavy recovery vehicles will be on site for the duration of the works to assist with vehicle recovery in the event of a breakdown or other incident. Traffic will be continuously monitored and drivers are requested to stay with their vehicles until assistance arrives on the scene.
Drivers and other users should expect delays throughout the works and are advised to adjust their journeys accordingly.
Drivers should also take particular care during this period and follow all road signs and traffic management arrangements.
We will provide contemporary information and traffic reports on our website. For further information please visit www.tamarcrossings.org.uk.
