I was with Steve when he first saw that corrugated shape, you could actually see his brain ticking over.

Ooooh!! Brise soleil!! Get 'er!!

So, what date is the huge crowd (complete with kids sat on the wall!) and why was the rhs of the stand empty then? Anyone know?

Great photos, love it!

Looking at the last picture - the old Mayflower terrace supporters will be getting wet!

To be fair, it was Nick Tomlinson who first spotted it.

He certainly did but as soon as you turned around, I could see the cogs whirring.

Me? I just thought 'that's a funny squiggly shape'.

It was the first use of the stand, 22 Sep 1951, against Bristol Rovers (we lost 2-1). Attendance: 25,593. Only one third of it was open because the rest was still being built. Can't see H&S allowing that these days. ;)

No, more's the pity. I wonder how many Janners died or were injured in that game?

Snowflakes, we're surrounded by snowflakes.

Thanks Steve GoS

I have a vague memory of that day, of course, because I was 51 days old!!

That area is ‘covered’ though, it just shows that even in fully covered stadiums the lower tier is liable to get wet depending where the wind is blowing.

Same can be said about the Lindy though, as you walk up the stand it's wet a fair few rows back, normally until M or N before the cover takes effect.

I would wager that the seating at the front of the GS doesn't go as high as M in the Lindy.
