You’re right Mervyn, although I did mention Lou Reed in my OP which may be the next best thing!
I listened to Hunky Dory about two weeks ago, which I think is my favourite of all his stuff but is a pretty close call between that and one or two others. Weirdly, I am a Bowie fan who never totally got into his Berlin trilogy.

The Receiving End of Sirens - The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi

(Very apt title and concept in current global conditions!)

Glorious album that you’ll pickup new nuances on every time you listen.

Thanks for that Dave. Have just had a quick sample listen on ITunes. Will download it. It reminds me of Doves. Would that be fair?

TREOS definitely heavier and more experimental, especially on this album. Their first album is less experimental and has some better individual songs (‘Planning a prison break’ and ‘This armistice’ in particular), but as a single piece of (concept) music Mi Fa Mi is excellent.

Downloading it from iTunes as we speak Dave. Will let you know what I think. Was it released on vinyl?

Sincerely looking forward to your thoughts.

If the concept and album does grab you, the whole theory the album is based on of the Earth 'singing' Misery Famine Misery by Johannes Keplar makes for interesting reading.

'Between the Heart and the Synapse' I believe was released on vinyl; not 100% sure about The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi.

Thanks Dave. I looked it up on Popsike and it is available on vinyl but usually sells for around £100. Pretty rare obviously. I’ll see if I like the download first!!

This is a great thread with some fine suggestions for stuff I haven't heard before.

If I could just throw an album that I have been listening to a LOT recently
'Lighthouse' by the Norwegian band Oak. It came out in 2013, but I only found it towards the end of last year. I dunno what it is about it, it is just so cool... slightly prog, slightly folk, beautiful singing.
Their second album 'False Memory Archive' is also good, but I prefer 'Lighthouse'. They are supposed to be working on their third album this year, but I guess that depends on restrictions. I can't wait!!

LP (great moniker for this thread) - this is starting to get expensive now. People keep coming up with albums I’ve never heard and I feel duty bound to download em. I don’t do the whole Spotify thing or Apple Music, but I probably should. That’s how I’ve ended up with over 15000 tracks on my iPhone to add to the vinyl and cd collection. Will give Oak a listen!

I’m loving this thread too. Full of positive vibes man!

If you’re after recommendations, American Dream by LCD Soundsystem.

Hi Dave - just got back from my afternoon dog walk in the woods, with this album playing through my Bose headphones. Really great stuff - I feel as if I’ve been hit by a sledgehammer! It’s like a cross between Spiritualized/Doves/Clyro and Flaming Lips all on Acid! Thanks for the recommend, I will be listening to it again before lockdown is over!

My choice of classic album would change each week but it would come down to....

Boston - Boston.
Thunder - Backstreet Symphony.
Metallica - black album.
Blondie - Parallel Lines.
Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction.
Blondie - Plastic Letters.

I’d personally go for And Justice for All, but that’s probably down to me being a guitarist. All that it needs is a bit of bass in it.

Whenever I mention the bass thing to my HIFI dealer, I get a funny look. It’s so important for good sound and I hate it when albums are light on it. I hate the production on Bowie's Berlin trilogy cos it all sounds a bit light weight. I know that’s almost sacrilege!

Delighted to hear it’s been a hit. Superb analogy, too!

If you want anymore recommendations :) :

Thrice - Beggars (blues undertones from an at times post hardcore band)

The Dear Hunter - Act II: The Meaning of, and all things regarding Ms. Leading (Lots of different instruments, lovely composition. Casey was the ex lead singer for TREOS)

Marmozets - The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets (fantastic female vocalist, a little bit mathy but this album is more radio-friendly than their more hardcore and mathy EP)

Enjoy :)
