It's interesting that the terminology is often more stubborn than the technology itself, though. In the case of phones, for instance: pick up, on the line, ring, dial, hang up. In fact all of them - especially the last one - go right back to the days of phones with separate earpieces, which you'd literally hang up again to cut the connection and end the call. (Just a bit of info for the youngsters!)

May I add some more "recent" ones:

Dial up
Landlines
VHS
DVD (maybe not quite)

The floppy disk only survives due to the save symbol

Not to be picky, but I did mention the phone-derived 'dial' and 'line' above!

Speaking of dial-up, who under 30-odd would know the once-ubiquitous AOL? Even more recently, once mega-sites like MySpace and Friends Reunited, the latter of which I remember ITV buying for some absurd sum (several hundred million, I think it was) only to find that it was being rapidly superseded by Facebook and the like.

The innovation that changed everything, meaning that companies like Facebook could insinuate themselves into every aspect of billions of lives and make it almost impossible for them to disengage? The iPhone, quickly imitated by everyone else.

In relation to cinemas, saying to your friends, “This is where we came in”. I recently tried explaining to my grandchildren the whole concept of once entering a cinema halfway through a movie, and watching 2 films until suddenly the second half of the first film made sense as you left. They think we were barmy.

They also can’t imagine TVs in black and white. My youngest said, “why didn’t they just invent colour straight away?”
Remember, I before E except when you run a feisty heist on a weird foreign neighbour in Chudleigh.

The modern equivalent is preparing a "playlist" within your music provider of choice.

Back in the day you selected a pile of 7" singles and placed the stack on an auto-changer.

Lift Attendant - amazing to think people were employed to press the floor buttons for you.

That reminds me: I once worked at a garage as a petrol pump attendant, while running the little shop on my own at the same time. That feels like ancient history now.
