Director of football Damien Comolli needs to speak before hitting the sherry.

''Liverpool's Carling Cup triumph will encourage the interest of top players around Europe looking to join the club in the summer''
''The Reds beat Cardiff .... etc .... to lift their first piece of silverware .. etc .. a place in the UEFA Europa League''
..... Reds chief claims Liverpool's ongoing revival under Kenny Dalglish has already caught the eye of several high-profile players ... etc.... We already know that there are big players who want to join us next summer because they believe in the project," said Comolli
"There's a very positive vibe around the club around Europe. A lot players I know are very interested about joining the project because it's a very interesting project."

Players don't join for a project - they join for massive pay deals. Europa egg cup will bring in players - yeah right !!!

Why is it now a 'project'?

I would suggest that by fielding their best team in order to win the league cup Liverpool have actually made it harder to qualify for the champions league as their results in between the 2 legs of the semi finals bear out (0-0 v Stoke, 1-3 v Bolton). You would therefore assume these 'big players' that want to join them would not be looking for champions league football or not wanted by those that are playing it.

Definition: "project"
a word used by managers in recent times to defne a failed transition period.

Currently trending with AVB (who has realised his squad is deemed not good enough) and now Liverpool.

Im sure many others will use it... Wenger for sure.

Will SAF use the phrase if Utd end the season trophy-less?

This may come as a surprise to some of you, and it will certainly come as a blow to the Liverpool-haters, but on the continent of Europe, Liverpool are still far and away regarded as the biggest and most famous English team! No question. I have enough contacts in Europe, particularly in Spain and Italy, to know this for sure!

The mancs appear to think they have the bragging rights, having one more domestic Championship, but what b*llocks! That just pales into insignificance beside Liverpool's five European Cups! That gives them a Europe-wide reputation of excellence. For just as we would probably struggle to say how many domestic Championships the great European sides have won, but know precisely how many European cups they have won, so too the Europeans can easily tell the most successful English club!

Indeed with five victories in the Premier European competition, the Reds are the third most successful team of all time, only Real Madrid with nine and AC Milan with seven have done better.

So no, it probably won't take much more success for top-class players to want to join Liverpool. Because Liverpool FC are already very highly regarded. Probably a lot more so abroad than they are in their own country!

Well, go on believing that if it makes you happy, but it's complete b*llocks! :funny:

Liverpool are far bigger on the continent, as you'd know if you had any contact with European fans. They tend to judge teams not by all the media hype and crap (so Beckham doesn't even enter into the equation! ) but by success in the European trophies.....

And thats in the Champions League/European Cup:- Liverpool 5, Mancs 3

The other Competitions (Cup Winners Cup, UEFA Cup) Liverpool 3 Mancs 1

or 8-4 in total!

Liverpool's real period of impact was 1976 -81 when they won four trophies including 3 European Cups in just six seasons. (When have the mancs ever had a period of domination like that?)

Anfield is acknowledged throughout Europe as one of the legendary European stadiums. Old Trafford has never had that status. "You'll Never Walk Alone" is known throughout the continent. (And the manc song is? )

The "Busby Babes" thing and the Munich air tragedy definitely raised the profile of the mancs in this country, but much less so in Europe, where there have been other and even more severe air disasters. (Which we in this country seem remarkably ignorant of) For example the entire Torino team and all officials died in one terrible tragedy in which everybody on board the aircraft was killed.
That is not in any way to suggest Munich was not a terrible tragedy (of course it was) but it does not have quite the same significance for the Europeans as it does for us in this country.

There is no doubt that the mancs are a famous name in Europe. But they're like Roma or Valencia, whereas Liverpool are more like AC Milan or Barcelona! Just a step up in class, fame and achievement.

Absolutely farcical comments, Utd are one of the biggest teams in the World, Liverpool used to be but are no longer and will not attract any top player without Champions League football.

You'll Never Walk Alone was originally a Man Utd/Celtic song was it not?

Yes, this is sensible. Let's have an argument about which team no-one on here really cares about is the most popular with a bunch of people no-one on here really cares about.

Talk about trying to drown a fish in water...

You miss the point entirely! Which is to have a bit of fun winding the plastic mancs up!

And they react so entertainingly, like scalded cats every time! :funny:

If there's one thing which typifies the mancs, it's a complete lack of a sense of humour!

Look at the way some of the muppets reacted to Colleen Rooney on Twitter posting a good luck message to Liverpool for the League Cup Final! Screams amd howls of "traitor", "you no good bitch" and even supposedly some death threats!!!

Clearly they couldn't work out it was almost certainly only a bit of banter to wind up hubby. And you don't need many brain cells to work out that possibility.

But then if you had enough brain cells to work that out, it would be too many to be supporting the mancs, anyway!!! :funny:

Wind up or not Jonesy for once I disagree with you. I have lived on the continent for 11 years now and talk to many footy fans of many nationalities and in my experience Man Utd are regarded higher than Liverpool without question. I think the difference now is that The Champions league is a much tougher tournament to win than the old European Cup, hence why nobody has managed it twice in a row. With the dominance Utd have had in the past 20 years domestically they would certainly have played in many more European Cup Finals under the old system where only the league champions qualified for the tournament, thus the tournament would not have as present Madrid plus Barca, AC Milan plus Inter, Man Utd plus Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal etc. When Man Utd won in 68 they beat minor teams Hibernians of Malta, Sarjevo of Yugoslavia and Gornik Zabre of Poland before their only tough encounter with Real Madrid in the semi prior to meeting a decent Benfica team in the final. Likewise, Liverpool in 1977 played the might of Crusaders of Ireland, Transzonspor of Turkey, St Etienne of France and only Zurich of Switzerland in the semi before meeting Moenchengladbach in the final.

The competition should have been called The Champions League when you had to win the league to be in it and should be the European Cup now.
