Ade it was my experience that a lot of the time away fans gained entry by simply turning up at the door and seeing if there were any tickets available.
Whilst the tickets nearly always sold out, quite often people couldn't make it and tickets would be returned and then sold on the door to ensure full occupancy.
Away fans often turn up to the ground around 1pm, which in hindsight was probably an optimum time, as an hour into opening, people would have came in and returned unwanted tickets from their friends.
Again, doesn't help with going forward, but might offer an explanation to your question (along with the fact that I'd imagine some of the regular away fans, which there were a few, would book in advance using the ticketline).
