I will do my best, and factor in teams who play each other next week, but it will take me a few hours to work it all out

Rich hadn't posted anything for a while (Presumably because people were trying to over complicate things) but i thought i'd try and update this, i'm not 100% sure everything's right but i think it is.

I find these tables and comments great fun and probably because I have more time on my hands than I should admit to and boosted by the win over Northampton yesterday, I have come up with a few stats that probably give more positive vibes than negative.....With 11 games to go we have 55pts if you simply take the average points per game we have achieved thus far then we will finish with 72pts (to nearest whole point). However, if you look at the seasons fixtures and take any previous 11 CONSECUTIVE matches the average number of points achieved is 16. Thus we would finish on 71pts. The worst consecutive 11 matches saw us gain just 10pts which would give us just 65pts at the end of the season while the best was 21pts which of course gives us 76pts. Of the 25 occasions that 11 consecutive results have occurred (still with me?) on 7 occasions (the most) we garnered 18pts. So reproducing that 'reliable form' would see us finish with 73pts. Only once in the last 10 years has 72pts not been enough to qualify for the play-offs (2007/8) and once (2004/5) the teams in 6th and 7th had 72 and so did the team in 8th but goal difference prevailed. Our goal difference is superb just now and if we did finish on 72pts well chances are it would still be superb. I hope this all makes sense because it has given me renewed hope that we will be in the play-offs!!

And if they're already promoted or better still guaranteed a play-off place, that could be very good for us.

So we need another 12-16 points from 9 games. I have my doubts!

and if you factor in Burton at home and Portsmouth and Shrewsbury away, as being difficult games, those doubts are well justified

I admire your effort, but it means nothing except for previous points gained by champions, promotion etc. there are only a finite number of points available and shock horror teams play each other! 60 points for safety? PMSL

It's not saying you need 60 points for safety, it's saying if you've got 60 points you're currently safe because you can't be relegated. Yes it doesn't factor in teams playing each other but the amounts available wouldn't change one club would still be able to reach a certain amount of points so it still works.

You may well PYSL laughing, but that's primarily because you're a curmudgeonly old git with a bladder disorder. Chill out a little.
